3rd Party Software Installation RRS feed

  • Question

  • What's the best ways to install software on a headless server (of course software designed or tested that it will work on WHS)?
Can a CD drive be shared? How is this done?
Can I copy the contents of an  installation CD to a folder on the Server? Again, how?

    Thanks for any help.

  • Any software designed for use on Windows Home Server will install as a server add-in. Instructions for installing add-ins will be found in the Windows Home Server console application's help files.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  •  Hello Ken,

Thank you for your reply.  I appreciate your concern to keep one from corrupting their WHS by performing "unsupported" tasks.  I also appreciate the ability to due things not found in "Windows Home Server console application's help files".  In case anyone comes across this thread for similar advise, below are some answers I received from other forums that may help you.  With Ken's safety protocols in mind: PLEASE USE AT YOUR OWN RISK: And just to be clear Ken I'm not mocking you, I really do understand how some advise to inexperienced users can cause potential problems :)

I would say depends on the type of software, for example if it’s a single file, say "setup.exe" one can easily throw it into a share \\server\public and then remote desktop into your server, copy from the share to the server's desktop and run install.

If however you have content on a CDROM, if the server is headless then yes you could connect an external eSATA, USB or firewire CDROM device and then remote desktop and use that to install.

Another way is via remote desktop, put the installation medium into your PC (i.e. desktop) then open remote desktop and go to "Local Resources" and click on "More" under the local devices and resources section. Ceckbox the drive which you want to have available via remote desktop, for example drive D:\ is my CD/DAFT drive on my desktop. Apply and connect via remote desktop, your drive is now available on your server but your installation media and CD/DVD drive is in your desktop =)

I find the easiest way is to extract the CD/DVD to a folder and copy that to the shares. Then use Advanced Admin Console or remote desktop to lauch the file(s).
