Entered a product key but STILL a problem..HELP! RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, I have been using Vista Home Premium for over a year now, and I have been just asked for the 'Product key' or 'windows will stop working in 27 days'. I found my product key which was a sticker at the bottom of my laptop; so I typed it in. A window popped up and said this:

'The product key you have entered will not work with this edition of Vista.

You must either run Windows Vista setup or enter a Windows Home Premium product key'

I read this, and was confused by 'enter a Windows Home Premium product key', which I had already enetered in and am certain it is the correct product key.

Can you please help me on this problem

    Thanks!

    2) COA SLP: This is the Product key that you see on the sticker on the side of your computer. It's a valid product key, but should only be used in limited situations. The key does require activation, but you must Activate by Phone.

You copy of Vista is currently using the OEM SLP product key and should self activate. If it is not self activating, you can try the below steps.

If the below steps do not work and you need to use the COA SLP key and Vista is returning the error that the key is not a Vista Home Premium key, you will need to contact the Manufacturer of the computer for support with that issue.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

First off, there is a Support Doc: "You may be prompted to activate Windows Vista on a computer on which Windows Vista was already activated by a Volume License or OEM installation" at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;931573  That I believe is specific to your issue. Please follow the resolution portion of the doc.

If that does not resolve your issue, please follow the steps below. If the first set of steps does not resolve, move on to the next set of steps.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Step set #1

    1) Open Internet Explorer

    2) A Browser will open, type: %windir%\system32 into the address field

    3) Find the file cmd.exe

    4) Right Click on the cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator

    5) Type: cscript %windir%\System32\slmgr.vbs /ilc %windir%\System32\licensing\ppdlic\Security-Licensing-SLC-ppdlic.xrm-ms

    6) Hit the Enter key

    7) Reboot 2 times

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lastly, both your Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 and Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 were installed using Volume Licensing Keys (VLK), both of which have been blocked by Microsoft.

Volume Licensing copys of Office are not sold to individual users. They are sold to large companies, universities and govenment agencies enabling them to manage a large number of installs easier.

Please uninstall these copies of Office Immediately.

If your organization gave you these Volume Licensing Key to use with your Office installs, please contact your Network Admin or IT Dept for your organization's proper VLK.

If you received these VLKs from a retailer, please return to the Company or Person that sold you these copies of Office and demand the Genuine Microsoft Software, that you paid for.

  • Hello Overton81,

Your Diagnostic Report shows your Vista as Genuine.

However, I do see that you have a Trial version of Office. Since you did not provide a description of the issue, I can only assume your issue is that when you run one of the Office programs, it asks for a Product key.

Computer manufacturers often install a trial version of Microsoft Office.  If you are getting a prompt to type in a Product Key when opening a Microsoft Office program, it is likely the trial period is over and you'll need to purchase a license (product key) for Microsoft Office

The product key affixed to your computer is for Windows Vista (the operating system) and not for Microsoft Office.
Please review the following for additional information:

You told me to uninstall both Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 and Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007; I had uinstalled it and was very disapointed to see that all of my microsoft word, excel, powerpoint 2007 etc disappeared. I was also unable to open any of my word documents on my computer!

Is there anyway I could get my 2007 microsoft, excel etc documents back?

I need to open my documents, and can't seem to open up a new document

I told you to uninstall both Microsoft Office programs because both were installed using Non-Genuin Volume License Keys (i.e. both were Non-Genuine Microsoft software). Did you contact your organization's Network Admin/IT Dept for your organization's proper Office Volume License Key OR did you contact the person or company that sold you this non-genuine Office software and demand the Genuine Microsoft software, that you paid for?

If you just need to open the office files, you can download free Office Viewers from the Microsoft Download site here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/results.aspx?pocId=&freetext=viewer&DisplayLang=en

If you need to open, as well as edit or create office files, you can purchase a Genuine copy of Microsoft Office at http://windowsmarketplace.com/content.aspx?ctId=391 or any reputable software retailer.

    Thank you,
