MSE says my copy of Win7 Home Premium not valid RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a two month-old new computer bought from Staples.  It's a Compaq.  This morning, all of a sudden, MSE says that my copy is not valid.  Windows still reports that my copy is activated.  This is obviously a glitch with Microsoft somewhere.  Here's the copy and pasted report:

  • OK, against my better judgement I uinstalled and reinstalled MSE, and it's happy once again.  However, the uninstall of MSE required the OneCare unistaller, followed by using the Windows Installer Cleanup utility to unnstall two programs (one was Microsoft Antimalware something or other) and then running mse /u to complete the uninstall.  Then I reinstalled MSE and it seems to be happy as a clam.  Again, thanks for the help, but please MS get your act together or Apple and Linux will rule the computer world soon.

  • I see no errors and the report says licensed. On rare occasions errant messages show up, typcially a reboot will fix it. Go to www.microsoft.com/genuine, validate your copy of windows. If everything is fine then I wouldn't worry unless it happens again, make sure MSE is back to normal status.

  • Thanks for the speedy reply.  After a reboot, MSE is still reporting that my copy isn't valid.  This appears to be a bug in MSE.   Any further suggestions?

BTW, my first name is Carl and I live in Ohio.  Am I talking to myself! :-)

  • What happens when you go to the validation site?
    Sunday, June 27, 2010 2:55 PM
  • The validation check says: "Windows validation was successful," but MSE says it's not valid still, even after downloading and running the validation check.  -- CJD

  • If it was me, I would uninstall MSE and reinstall it, however, if you do so you may not be able to reinstall it. Wait for Monday, see if Darin from MS has any suggestions. Also, try the MSE forum.

Provide a link to this thread so they know you have tried the WGA, and that your windows is activated and validated. Maybe someone has allready dealt with a similar problem there.

  • Thanks for the suggestions, I'm tempted to just uninstall MSE and install the free version of AVIRA.  It's kind of a statement on the overall institutional problems at MS when its own free AV misreports the genuine status of a computer.  It appears that at times the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing at MS these days.  I know that there are more complex reasons for this problem from a technical standpoint, but I've had a number of similar issues recently (e.g., a beta version of Office 2010 would not completely uninstall and prevented the released version from installing.  This was on another machine, not the one with the MSE problem.  I spend the better part of a week trying to resolve that issue, which I eventually did, but it shouldn't have been an issue in the first place.  MS, as a corporation, needs to do some thorough re-evaluation of the way it does business, or it's better days will be behind it.  Again, thanks for your help, and none of the rant above is directed at you, personally.

  • I did look at the MSE link you provided.  I found a few references to folks having the same problem.  None of the suggestions resolved the problem for me; therefore, I'll look for another AV solution on this computer, as I don't have the time to fiddle with this issue anymore.  I still run MSE on several others machines, and I will probably continue to do so -- unless this ugly problem rears its head on those machines, too.  I really like MSE -- when it works!

Left and right hands have been strangers forever in MS - it's nothing new, or unusual! :)

  • Hello Anonymous7293,

It is not unusual at all for a complete uninstallation of an antivirus product to require additional helper programs.  Symantec, McAfee, TrendMicro and others all publish helper programs to fully uninstall their products.

I actually sit next to the PM for MSE and have consulted with her on how WGA works and how it appears to work in MSE.

MSE reporting Windows as Non-Genuine is a fairly rare issue usually occuring (if I remember correctly) in XP. On other versions of Windows it appears to usually relate to a bad install (I'm not completly sure on this point, but it does appear that way).

So in this case, the left and right hands do know each other (and are actually pretty good friends). They are aware of the issue and it is getting attention.

    Thanks,

    Darin MS
