  • A "Blocked VLK" is a Volume License Key that is valid, but was licensed solely to a corporation or larger enterprise/business. Blocked VLK's are Product Keys that Microsoft has received consent from the original owner to block usage of. A VL Product Key is non-transferrable to individuals. In order to resolve your non-genuine licensing issue, please visit: www.microsoft.com/genuine and click on "Validate Windows". When validation fails, click on the Get Genuine button which will provide information on how to acquire a WGA Kit.

  • Dmps23,

Right now, your Dell Dimension 8100 computer has a Volume Licensing edition of XP Pro installed (Line 8), and that installation was done with a now-blocked Volume Licensing Key (VLK) (Line 2).  VLKs are blocked by Microsoft at the request of the original keyholder for such reasons as the key was lost, stolen, compromised, misused, or expired.  Also, MS may have blocked the key if it notices a pattern of misuse, ie, more installations of XP using that key than authorized.

If you search the forum for the part of the VLK reported by the mgadiag utility, PY6BX-K24PJ-TWT6M, you will see that at least two dozen other posters have submitted reports with that same blocked VLK.

As a rule, VL editions of XP should not be sold to individual consumers.  Businesses, schools and gov'ts normally use VL editions for flexibility in installing many computers.  Also, a Volume License for XP is an upgrade license ONLY and cannot be used as the original license on a new computer.

This is why you were seeing the "software counterfeiting" messages on your computer, because the current installation of XP is an unauthorized installation.

Also, please note that the mgadiag utility is identifying your installation of Office XP Pro w/Front Page as being Not Activated.  Please be advised that Office XP Pro w/Front Page is a very commonly pirated instalaltion of Office, so at some point in the future when you activate it, it may also come up with a Blocked VLK.

Luckily, the solution to your problem should be simple.  Use the recovery solution supplied by Dell to replace the nongenuine volume installation of XP Pro with the genuine OEM installation of XP; it's likely that your Dell was shipped with XP Home Edition.  You can determine which XP your computer is licensed for by looking for the MS Certificate of Authenticity affixed to the computer case.  Be sure to back up and offload your data before you do the recovery or reinstallation because typically the recovery process destroys all data on the hard disk.

If you do not have the Reinstallation CD supplied by Dell, you can order the CD for many Dell models directly from Dell for a reasonably modest fee, usually around $15.  If they cannot help you, try http://www.restoredisks.com
