What is PBX / EPABX / KTS ?
PBX = Private Branch Exchange
EPABX = Electronically Private Automated Branch Exchange
KTS = Key Telephone System
These all are the names by which we refer to the private exchanges. They are used to provide telephone services in a company using a minimal amount of external telephone lines.
With the help of EPABX, the persons can talk internally for no cost. If they want to make an external call, then only they need to pay. There can be >=8 internal phones in the company, and >= 2 trunk telephone lines.Friday, March 23, 2007 5:14 PM -
What all services are provided by PBX ?
PBX provides all basic telephony services such as making calls, receiving calls, putting calls on hold, etc.
But with these minimal functions, they also provide some additional functions. They may include :
1. Direct Inward Dialing
2. Do Not Disturb Service
3. Opening / Closing Door
4. Seizing calls
5. Store Call Data on some PC / print directly to printer
6. Locking certain lines
7. Barge-in.
8. and lot more to list here....Friday, March 23, 2007 5:19 PM -
Functionally, the PBX performs three main duties:
- Establishing connections (circuits) between the telephone sets of two users. (e.g. mapping a dialed number to a physical phone, ensuring the phone isn't already busy)
- Maintaining such connections as long as the users require them. (i.e. channeling voice signals between the users)
- Providing information for accounting purposes (e.g. metering calls)
Customised Abbreviated dialing (Speed Dialing)
Shared message boxes (where a department can have a shared voicemail box)

Thanks for support chethan. Now lets extend it in all possible parts, with all knowledge that we have.
In this post, I'll discuss about LCR in short.
LCR stands for Least Cost Routing.
It's a table built into hardware of PBX and is used to select phone line when someone wants to make call. This table is defined and maintained by the system administrator. In this table, we specify the ordering and priority of lines that should be followed while making call.
In LCR, for each group of trunks, permissions are also checked before making a call.Saturday, March 24, 2007 3:31 PM -
Hey chethan, please start discussing each capability of PBX you've mentioned. I'm with you and will also explain them. Please start their explanation.
If you want me to answer how we can perform some functions using computer, I'm ready to explain it's interfaces and methods, that I've used.
Please reply ....Saturday, March 24, 2007 3:35 PM -
