Disable VAD?

Question
-
Hi
I'm not sure which component is responsible for it (though I haven't heard anything about this being an issue for moc <-> moc calls so I presume it only concerns the mediation server) - bottom line, when we make calls over the mediation server (r2) to our existing PBX (over a SIP trunk which has no VAD.. guaranteed as I have other lab systems on trunks configured the same way and they have no issues...), people often ask me the dreaded "are you still there" because apparently they only hear silence when I'm not talking - which is a clear indicator that there's VAD at work.
So, is there a way to turn this off? It can only be an issue in the Microsoft world, since the equipment on the traditional PBX has no such issues, neither are other systems connected to that PBX (we have 7 PBXes from 3 manufacturers trunked together.. and our Microsoft environment is the only one where we experience that issue).
FYI affected calls go MOC => edge => mediation => SIP trunk.

Stephan,
I believe this is rathter related to the endpoint. We have Polycom CX700, CX200 ans Snom deployed. Only Tanjay device users have reported similar issue.

Hi all,
we are experiencing exactly the same problem. Is there any way to disable VAD with the Tanjay Phone?

It´s exactly the same at our site.
Or is there a possibility to send this feature request to Microsoft so they can add it to one of the next firmware releases?

Hi,
VAD is part of the Microsoft UC Media stack; any device that uses OCS voice (in otherwords all OCS devices) is going to do VAD. You can test this by running wireshark on a laptop with the OCS client installed. Start a call, then mute the call: you'll see no more voice packets coming from your laptop. The same thing will happen if you are silent in a quiet room... it's definitely not just the endpoint. It may seem worse with the Tanjay because you don't control the Mic sensitivity on the device & it may therefore pick up less background/ambient noise - causing VAD to kick in.
If you are pairing your Tanjay with your laptop w/ a USB cable - you could try running that Audio Tuning wizard & setting the tanjay mic sensitivity all the way up. Otherwise, I think you're out of luck.
If you take a look at the doc from MS on real time audio & how it works - you see that VAD is pretty well embedded in the process.
Edgar: if it were me, I'd call this a feature request for next versions. There's no way to tune/tweak at this point that I know of.

Matt
