After running Microsoft Fix It Center , IE8 has crashes and errors RRS feed

  • Question

  •  Last night I downloaded and installed Microsoft Fix It Center on my Win XP Pro SP3 computer. Since I've been having problems with my IE8 browser being slow and sluggish at times , I ran the "Internet Explorer freezes or crashes" tool. The tool reported no problems with IE8 , on my computer. But when I re-started IE8 , just after running the tool, I found that just about every time I use the search window( in the upper right side of browser) , the new tab crashes and IE8 has to recover the tab. I tried different search engines , but the result is always a crashed tab. And often when I click on a link , from my search results ( on the recovered tab ) , the page will crash again requiring IE8 to recover the web-page.

My Firefox browser isn't affected by this problem. I also ran a Spy-ware scan , which reported no malware on my machine. When I looked into computer management's > event viewer>application, I found a Warning and Error reports. The Warning report contained :

    " Event Type: Warning
    Event Source: MatSvc
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 12
    Date:  4/16/2010
    Time:  10:31:48 PM

    Computer: LEOLIVER
    Description:
The MATS service encountered a failure when getting HTTP proxy settings. hr=0x80072F94
    .Keyword:GetUrlProxyInfo"

And the Error reported :  " Event Type: Error
    Event Source: Application Error
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 1000
    Date:  4/17/2010
    Time:  8:55:44 AM
    User:  N/A
    Computer: LEOLIVER
    Description:
    Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 8.0.6001.18702, faulting module msvcrt.dll, version 7.0.2600.5512, fault address 0x00036fa3. "

Any feedback on this issue will be greatly appreciated .

    Thanks.

  • Hi Larry,

I've received the information you submitted. Given that no problem was detected in the report, per our solution engineers, it's unlikely that the troubleshooter would have taken any changes to your computer system that could have caused your problem.

Would you mind giving the following steps a try as a workaround?

    1. go to IE's "Manage Add-ons" option under the Tools menu

    2. remove the affected "Search Providers"

    3. reboot the computer

    4. add the removed "Search Providers" again from http://www.ieaddons.com/en/searchproviders

  • Hi Larry,

I am sorry to hear about the problem you ran into after running the "IE freezes or crashes" troubleshooter. May I get a zipped copy of the subfolders your computer has under "c:\program files\micrsoft fix it center\MATS\reports"? The subfolders contain past execution results of troubleshooters. The zipped file should be way less than one megabytes in size. You may find this folder on a different drive if you use a different drive than C: as your system drive. With such info, we can probably determine what action the troubleshooter has taken on your computer.

BTW, you may ignore the warning message above. It is not relevant to your problem and is a benign warning.

The application error message above, however, indicates that an instance of the Internet Explorer process has terminated prematurely. This error message is probably related to the problematic behavior you experienced.

    If convenient, please kindly submit the zipped info to me at D A N I E L . C H O W (at) M I C R O S O F T . C O M. I will pass the info to the party responsible for this troubleshooter for investigation.

    Many thanks for your patronage.

                                                         Daniel,

     I'm not certain how to submit to you, the report info you requested. I tried e-mailing it to you, via       D A N I E L.C H O W @ M I C R O S O F T.C O M , but I received a server error. Do have a e-mail address I could use ?

    Thanks.

Never mind the request I made in my last reply , about needing a different e-mail address. On my failed attempt to e-mail you, I copied&pasted your address and I recieved a failed delivery message. But when I typed your e-mail address , the message was sucessfully delivered. Maybe when I used copy&paste , I picked up some "background code" or something . But I have sent you the reports you requested.

And I have narrowed down , my IE8 crashes , to the use of search tools . When I use either Google or Yahoo to perform a internet search , that's only when IE8 crashes . So somehow the Microsoft Fix It Center tool has "messed up" my internet search engines on my IE8 toolbars.

    Thanks.

  • Hi Larry,

Your email didn't reach my email address. Would you mind re-sending to me? Please send the info I requested as a zip file and kindly type in my email address in your email, just like you did the last time. Copy & paste wouldn't work because of the whitespaces in between the letters. They were intentionally added to thwart email address crawling.

    Many thanks,

  •                                                                  Daniel,

I re-typed your e-mail address and re-sent the Report file in a zipped folder. I must have got your address right this time because I haven't received a "returned mail delivery error notice" yet. I did try running IE8(with all add-ons disabled) and I was then able to search without having the tab crash and then recover. I tried disabling some of the add-ons ( the currently loaded add-ons ) , one by one and then attempting to perform a search. But that test resulted in the Tab always crashing and recovering. I also removed some obsolete Internet objects listed under "view objects" but no luck with that. I hope the Report file I submitted will show what add-on caused problems when I used the Fix It Center tool.

    Thanks.

  • Well, what did the report, I submitted tell about how this tool caused my IE8 to crash whenever I perform a internet search?

     Do I have to un-install and then re-install IE8? I hope not.

  • I just tried the solution you stated. It worked just fine when I had my Biz-Form password manager tool bar disabled. But when I enabled my Biz-Form tool-bar , and tried either a Google or Yahoo  search from my IE8 tool-bar , than the tab crashed just as did before. Probably because the Biz-Form tool-bar has a search window with both Google or Yahoo as search engine options. And my Biz-Form tool-bar is needed because I have most of my passwords stored in it. Unfortunately I don't know of a way to remove either Google or Yahoo options from the  Biz-Form tool-bar .

I sent a report about my problem to the Biz-Form web-site. And I'll post any feedback , I receive from Biz-Form about this problem. But it appears that the Biz-Form tool-bar and Microsoft Fix It Center aren't currently compatible with each other.

Right now I'm using the Bing search option, in my IE8 tool-bar and the DogPile search option in my Biz-Form tool-bar . With no problems.

    Thanks.

  • I have the same problem with BizForm and IE 8 on my 64 bit Windows 7 computer.  IE 8 just crashes.  I don't think I installed Microsoft Fix It Center (it does not show up in my control panel list of programs).
