failed to install project server 2010 trial on sharepoint 2010 trial RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

Why can't i install project server 2010 trial on sharepoint 2010 trial?

As stated on the trial download page: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/ee410540.aspx , i have to install sharepoint server 2010 first, and there is also a link to the sharepoint server 2010 trial.

I have already installed the sharepoint server 2010 trial, and confirmed that it is working.

When trying to install project server 2010 i receive the following error: http://i38.tinypic.com/6z118n.jpg

The project 2010 faqs at: http://www.microsoft.com/project/en/us/project-server-faqs.aspx also states that i have to install sharepoint server 2010 trial first.

    is this i bug?

  • Johannes - the error you are attaching is pointing to a conflict between trial and licensed versions. Just to confirm  - you already installed and you are running SharePoint 2010 Enterprise TRIAL and you are attempting to install Project Server 2010 TRIAL on the same server without having any other server requiring SharePoint 2010 as pre-requisite installed, correct?

In the mentime you can grab the Virtual Machine from the same link you are using above to download the physical installation bits http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/ee410540.aspx.

  • Hi Jan,

Yes i have already installed Sharepoint Server 2010 Enterprise trial, and yes it is without any other server requring Sharepoint 2010 as pre-requisite.

I have only installed Sharepoint Server 2010 because it is required when installing Project Server 2010.

I will try and download the virtual machine and see how it goes ;)

  • There is a problem using the Virtual machine, my users do not have the possibility to try the product in real?

  • Johannes - as we verified - you can install Project Server 2010 TRIAL on top of SharePoint 2010 Enterprise TRIAL. Are all in the same language version? Is there NONE other product requiring SharePoint 2010 installed on your farm? Can you browse any SharePoint site? What is the license information you are getting in SharePoint Central Admin, plase?

Back to your VM question - true - it's hard to make this part of the domain, but you can connect it to your company network so other users could access the PWA.

Are you testing Project Professional 2010 too, please? Has that worked fien for you, please?

  • Hi Jan,

I can verify that all languages are english, and the versions that you mention (project server 2010 trial and Sharepoint 2010 enterprise trial)

I installed the sharepoint 2010 enterprise trial on a fresh installed VM, and the sharepoint site is running (i can browse the site, and do all the sharepoint stuff)

the current licenses status is: SharePoint Server with Enterprise Client Access License

I would really like to test the server as a part of our domain.

    Kind regards

  • Johannes - sorry to hear that! I did try to install TRIAL version of Project Server 2010 in the scenario you are describing and it suceeded. I did "one server install" however. I have a confirmation from Project engineering that this is not only supported, but also tested scenario.

     The steps I did -

    1. Downloaded the 2008 Server VHD from http://www.microsoft.com/vhd (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=a4fbe2f3-45dd-46bf-8747-16a111c04107&displaylang=en)
    2. Joined the domain
    3. Installed SharePoint 2010 from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/ee388573.aspx and made sure I'm using the Enterprise CAL
    4. Ran the PSConfig
    5. Installed Project Server 2010 from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/ee410540.aspx
    6. Ran PSConfig again
    7. I'm not provisioning new PWA site...

We need to troubleshoot your specifics and logs. In order to do that, please ping me directly. Go to this blog http://blogs.technet.com/projectadministration/ and click "e-mail blog author" in the right rail to send me an e-mail!

  • Hi Jan,

I see you downloaded the 2008 server HVD, could this be the difference that gives me problems? I install the server from the bottom using my datacenter license.

I really don't do anything different than you, i install the server, join it to the domain, installs sharepoint 2010 trial downloaded from the website (and uses the enterprise CAL), and then installs the project server 2010 which fails.

I e-mailed you through the blog but have not received any reply yet :)

    Kind regards

  • I am really the only one who has this problem?

  • Johannes,

I was also able to install a trial Project Server on a windows server box (licensed) with a trial version of SharePoint. Note that I did not use the VM configuration, I downloaded the files from Microsoft (with the license keys provided):

This was the link I used for Project Server:

On the right side of this page, there was a link to the SharePoint trial:

    It also contained the link.

I was able to get the system up and running (although you will see I am having other issues) - and I am pretty noobish. But maybe you want to try this simple installation. The box I am using is running Windows Server 2008 R2, with about 8GB of memory. It's slow, but this is only a trial.

  • This is so frustrating!!!

    1. started a new virtual machine
    2. installed all updates, joined to the domain.
    3. installed Sharepoint server 2010 enterprise CAL
    4. checked that the sharepoint was running
    5. started the Project server 2010 installation

BAM! same error, why am i the only one experiencing this problem! I can't be the only one!

    :( :( :(

  • Hello Johannes,

What i understood from your description is, you have installed licensed copy of Sharepoint 2010. That is the issue.

Your current licenses status is: SharePoint Server with Enterprise Client Access License - It should be displayed as Trial

Install Sharepoint 2010 Trial - Use the Trial key & Do not run the wizard at the end of the installation.

Install Project Server 2010 Trial - Then run the sharepoint configuration wizard.

  • Hi Johannes and Jan,

I'm suffering what could be a related problem - in any case it's the failure of Project server trial to play nicely with sharepoint server trial.

I'm using MS Windows Server 2008R2 standard Trial (not virtual machine)

I install sharepoint trial. all is fine.

I install project trial... well, it installs. but then I get this:

The trial period for this product has expired.

Johannes, did you ever get to the bottom of your problem?

I notice that Jan has marked this question as answered at a date before which you indicated that you were still having problems.

  • Hi Luke,

No i did not received the error message that you are getting.

I solved my issue by downloading the Sharepoint 2010 trial from microsoft website, and NOT the technet version :)

  • Hi Johannes,

can you post a specific link to that? when I start at sharepoint.microsoft.com and go to download the trial it keeps taking me to somewhere under technet.microsoft.com.

  • Hi Luke,

Just follow the link were the trial download is located. That worked for me.

  • Hi Johannes,

Yeah, I think it's back up and working. I've been offsite for several weeks but will but will be back onto this next week.

I got a trial copy of MS project from our software provider but I'm fairly sure that's identical and that was bombing out. We'll see what happens next week.
