LogMeIn + FolderShare+orb.com vs LiveMesh, what am I missing

Hi,
I installed LiveMesh to play with it to see if it replace of trio I'm currently using for file sync, remote desktop access and remote file access. LogMeIn beats LiveMesh in remote desktop access, FolderShare seems to be providing the same functionality for file sync (except of offline access) and orb.com provides full remote document access plus all cool stuff about multimedia sharing and using remotely.
Am I missing something but except for offline access LiveMesh is still falls short of those trio combined. And bearing in mind that every product listed is free LiveMesh is still have some serious catching up to do.
My computers are always online so I don't really care about offline access.

Hi Lorry. Your not fully understanding Mesh if your just looking at the current Apps that ship with it. The current apps are only like the Notepad of apps that are possible. Mesh, foremost, is a dev Platform. Your trio is not a developer Platform. And downplaying the importance of local sync is like saying "my dog could be a dragon if it had wings". It just does not compare. Nobody says to move off your trio if it works for you.Friday, May 9, 2008 1:54 AM

You mean LiveMesh is a platform rather then service offering? Or you mean it's for developers that it's designed to be used for people who develop software?

Hi Lorry,
It's a long read, but hopefully this blog post may help clear up some confusion: Live Mesh as a Platform. There's a bunch of other goodies on the blog too.

this is a good question. I think Live mesh is a platform that fully support all devices include Windows Mobile. I hope I can access file and remote my PC from my Windows Mobile. Indeed, Mesh has a Live Desktop that gives you access personal folder when all your computer is off! And I like that Mesh can have an activity board that give me tracking the file changing. You know it is hard to know what file has been changed when you have over thousand or million files like photos in FolderShare!
But is it available to have programe everywhere in the live desktop like thinstall? but i think microsoft would not do that because it will decreade her income... ha Ha
Unfortunately, I don't have one now. I hope I can have an invitation. Can anyone give one to me? My Live ID is chihangc@msn.com

Henry,
People have been adding their LiveIDs to this thread to get invited by others.
Thanks!
Richard

So, this may be answered in the Mesh blog post, but let me ask it in the forum:
If Mesh is a platform, is Mesh a webtop OS of a sort too? Will we be able to "install" an .exe (standalone or not) and run it from the Live Desktop?
At what stage will we see that kind of functionality?
Thanks for your attention.

Ah, for the answer to that, you should definitely watch Ori's video on Channel 9.

LiveMesh is totally different from SkyDrive (FolderShare) in that LM stores and syncs your files to a Microsoft webserver (or wherever it goes ;) ) and to all participating PCs while SD only syncs to participating PCs. This means that you can use the files in LM anywhere (as long as the computer you're using has the app to run them, of course) whereas in order to access files in SD, the host computer must be online. I use LM for myself and SD for file-sharing.Thursday, August 7, 2008 5:21 PM

SkyDrive is a different Web application to FolderShare. FolderShare is a Peer-to-Peer transfer service, and SkyDrive is an online file hosting service!Thursday, August 7, 2008 6:41 PM -
Logmein Free is still way superior to Live Mesh Remote Desktop.
I find remote desktop to be much, much slower than using Logmein Free which I have been using for many years. There is no options to speed up the session by reducing the amount of colours or other settings.
Logmein allows me to resize the desktop of the remote machine to match the desktop of the current machine. I cannot do this with remote desktop and it's a major issue because at home I have a 30" running at 2560x1600 and when I'm trying to access it via my UMPC at 1024x600……you can imagine what it looks like. I then tried to exit the full screen remote session by pressing the X close and all that happened was the Vista thinking icon for 10 minutes until I gave up and had to do a hard shutdown on my UMPC as I couldn't even CTRL+ALT+DEL.

There is one thing where Mesh Remote Desktop is better then LogMeIn.
It's fast way to login to remote machine. Even if you have shortcut to your machine in LogMein you still have to go through 3-4 screens before you see remote desktop in Mesh Remote Desktop it's 1 click.Wednesday, August 20, 2008 2:40 PM
