I have removed the quoted portion of this original post at the request of the quoted poster. This thread is a new thread created by Niall Merrigan by splitting from the original thread. This was done to allow discussion on the topic and not hijack the original thread.

I understand but do you send the person an email advising them not to do this? If you don't, how do they learn not to do it again as unmarking a proposed answer does not notify the person?

We cant send email through the forum explicitly.
I get your idea, put a post in, they get notified if they have alerts set up correctly. But that assumes they have alerts set up correctly.
Some moderators on high volume forums dislike this function and deem it to be a rule, rather than against the spirit of its intended use (bad etiquette). Lower volume forums like this one, can allow some leeway on this and in general, I unmark as I go through. It is not in the how to use this forum guideline but I will add that today for clarity.
But in future I would appreciate if you could leave the moderation to the moderators..

Hi Jeff,
Fair enough, if that's what you got from it, then that's OK. It was a general statement.
Based on your feedback, I have added the do not propose your own answer guideline to the forum guidelines. Thanks for the feedback on that.

Sorry for my last post. It wasn’t meant to come out that sarcastically. I completely understand why there are moderators and why they need to control the forums. Once again, I apologise for my previous reply.
Cheers
Jeff

I am opening this up to a general discussion so that people can offer their own views and what they think. Bit more democratic.
I would agree with Jeff in saying that you shouldn't mark your own as the answer. However on the flip side, when I first started posting in this forum, I did that so I understand the thinking behind it.
Anyways comments welcome.

Ok at the risk of duplicating work, I will lock this thread and people can discuss on that post instead as its a more suitable location.
