product activation grace period has expired RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I thought I had validated Windows on Sept 25, but yesterday I got a one day warning and today it says the grace period has expired. I have a Dell pc I bought in 2004 with Windows XP professional pre-installed. The validation fails because it says my product key (on the outside of my pc) does not match the key found. The hard drive crashed in 2006 and Dell replaced it. Could that be the problem? I can provide a copy of my Dell purchase order. I also can provide screenshots of the Validation and Diagnostics. I also have a case number from Sept 25 that I can provide.

    Thanks.
    Ben

  • BenDZ,

Thank you for contacting the Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) program forum.

If you have a Microsoft Certificate of Authenticity (COA) for Windows XP affixed to your system, then there is a strong likelihood your system is licensed to run Windows XP.

Windows Product Key  Update Tool & Detailed Instructions:

    http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/selfhelp/pkuinstructions.aspx

The Product Key Update Tool was designed to update a non-genuine Product Key previously used to activate Windows XP with a known good Product Key.

If you have antimalware or firewall programs installed, please make sure these programs are set to allow the Product Key Update Tool to have full access to the Internet.

If the above doesn't work out, try Telephone Activation.

Thank you for visiting the WGA program forum.
