Fixing bad Win7 install with legit install RRS feed

  • Question

  • I used to have XP and thought that I could download and install a free copy of Win7 Enterprise through my university onto my home computer.  A couple weeks after installing I got the Win7 Build 7600 Not Genuine messages and realized that I wasn't supposed to install that copy on a home computer (I honestly didn't know that initially).  Since then I have bought a Win7 Professional 32 bit Upgrade installation disc through my university the proper way.  Now what do I do?  I tried activating it but it says I can't use the product key I was given.  I think it's because I have a bad version of Win7 Enterprise and am trying to activate Win7 Professional.  Please advise me of what I need to do at this point.  I ran the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool and got this:

  • That key you are using is called a KMS key. It needs to be used on a university network to activate. What you need to do is simply use the professional disk and perform a clean install. This will remove the enterprise installation and install a frsh copy of windows 7 pro. You should be good after that. Youll be genuine and assured that your copy is updated and safe. Any issues just reply.

  • Hello, brianderson

EndSecure is correct about the KMS key.

To clarify the installation procedure, since you have upgrade media, you will need to start the install from within Windows or it will not activate correctly. For XP, you would need to put in the disc and start the install making sure to choose Custom Install. The same would hold true for higher versions of Windows than professional.

If you didn’t format the drive before installing enterprise, and you still have the C:\Windows.old folder, you can restore your XP install:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971760/

  • Hello brianderson,

Your upgrade license for W7Pro requires that there be an installation of a Genuine qualifying Windows OS on the computer before you can sucessfully install W7.

Backup and offload your data, then do a clean installation of your previous Windows XP license onto the computer.  Activate the installation of XP, then update to XP SP3.  Then your W7Pro upgrade license will install properly.
