Microsoft does not offer any certification exams that test your knowledge on "core programming". Instead, they test on the various Microsoft technologies that may be used while you are programming. I would suggest starting with exam 70-536, "Microsoft .NET Framework, Application Development Foundation."

This exam counts as credit for several TS and PRO certifications. Also, the knowledge that you gain while studying for this exam will give you a solid foundation that will be useful when you develop .Net applications.

Alternatively, you may wish to start off with one of the latest certifications on the Framework 4.0, such as "MCTS: .NET Framework 4, Web Applications", which requires exam 70-515, or "MCTS: .NET Framework 4, Windows Applications" (70-511).

Other than that, I suggest taking a look at the "official" page that lists the Visual Studio certifications:

  • Hello,

I would suggest you to wait and go for latest exam 70-515 exam. It will be part of the new MCTS and MCPD .NET Framework 4 certifications. Candidates will need to use the new Visual Studio 2010 software to develop web applications using VB or C#.

  • I would look at the Microsoft Certified Professional Developer certification, this would help to demonstrate strong knowledge and ability in the .Net platform:
