  • Hello macppl,

Your Vista is using a KMS Client License key. (I know this from the Diagnostic Report line "Windows License Type: KMS Client" Unlike regular Product Keys (that need to be activated by contacting Microsoft) a KMS key must be activated thru a KMS Server.

The way it works is a large company, a large schools or any orginization with allot of computers, will setup a KMS Server within their network. They will fill it with a set number of Client Licenses (or Seats). All the Vista computers within the network, will be using a KMS Client key. Those KMS Clients Vista will be set to periodicallyt connect to the orginization's KMS Server. If there is a unused Client License, it will be issued to the KMS Client Vista and the Vista will Activate.

The KMS Client Vistas may leave the Network, where the KMS Server is located, for short periods (default is 6 month max), but must return to the network to renew it's License and Activation with the KMS Server. This is so that if a student is attending a school that provides free Windows to Active Students, the 'free' Windows would stop working once the student left or if a KMS Key was leaked to the internet, it would be useless to anyone not within the KMS Server's network.

Since I don't know how or why you have a KMS Client key, I will explain all the scenarios (that I can think of) a person might have a KMS Client key and would not be able to activate. In addition I include the resolution for each scenario.  You can pick the one that best pertains to you.

    a) A person's Organization provided the KMS Client key (or provided the computer that had the KMS key already in it). The KMS Client Vista was Activated by the KMS Server, but the computer has since been outside the KMS Server's network and is unable to renew it's License and re-activate. (or the user hasn't yet setup his Vista to connect to the KMS Server)

To resolve, the person needs to connect the KMS Client computer back to the KMS Server's network to renew it's license and reactivate. For assistance in setting up Vista to connect to the KMS Server, they will need to contact thier organization's IT Dept. or Network Admin.

    b) A person's School provided the KMS Client key (or provided the computer that had the KMS key already in it). The KMS Client Vista was Activated by the KMS Server, but the student has since left the school and the KMS Client is unable to renew it's License and re-activate.

To resolve, the person would need to either re-attend the school or buy a Retail copy of Vista and replace the KMS key with the Retail key.

    c) A person bought a computer that had a KMS Client Key already in it. The KMS Client Vista was Activated on the seller's KMS Server but after a few months the KMS Client Vista is unable to renew it's License and re-activate.

To resolve, the person should return to the seller and demand the Genuine Microsoft Software he paided for. Or at the very least, a refund. That person is also encouraged to submitt a Piracy Report at http://microsoft.com/piracy

    d) A person found the key out on the internet, once installed the KMS Client Vista provided a Grace Period to give time to the user to connect it to a KMS Server. Once the grace period ended, the KMS Client Vista is unable to renew it's License and re-activate.

    e) A person found the key out on the internet, once installed, the KMS Client Vista was directed to connect to a modified KMS Server located out on the internet, to activate. The modified KMS Server was since shut down and the KMS Client Vista is unable to renew it's License and re-activate.

To resolve d) and e) the person would need to buy a Retail copy of Vista and replace the KMS key with the Retail key.

    I hope that helps,
    Darin MS
