Hello ppl., I have a registered genuine Wondows XP Home edition CD and I would like to upgrade that to genuine Windows XP professional edition. I'm not able to find such deal. I'm wondering if microsoft offers such deal in which I can return my Home CD and license as well to upgrade to a Windows XP professional. If there is possibilitym that would be of great help for me as I'm desperately looking for one! Thank You!Wednesday, July 26, 2006 11:00 PM

KayKay,
AFAIK there is no MS-supported "trade-in" program to go from Home to Pro.
May I ask why you want to upgrade to XP Pro? What feature or features of XP Pro do you need that XP Home does not have? I ask this only because a lot of people mistakenly think that XP Pro is somehow a "better" or more reliable Operating System than XP Home, and they spend the extra money on Pro but they never needed any of the additional Pro features, thereby wasting their money.

Hi,
I need to extend the same inquiry. I have a few machines that had XP Home installed when purchased and they need to have XP Pro because we use a Domain Controller here that needs to authenticate the users. It seems that XP Home only talks WorkGroups. Am I mistaken in that assumpution? Is there another way to make Home edition Domain Savvy?

Windows XP Home Edition is not designed to join a domain. You'll need to upgrade to Windows XP Professional.

i have a similar problem in that i need to "upgrade" from xp home to xp pro. my laptop came with xp home, but we have since installed the SBS 2003. i want to join the domain and be able to administer the SBS from my laptop. my question is if i can do some sort of "upgrade" install with the xp pro cd. I have been using my laptop for 2 years now and really do not want to reinstall all the programs if i don't have to. in other words, is there a way to enable the xp pro functions without doing a new install and wiping out everything?Saturday, August 12, 2006 5:47 PM

An upgrade to Windows XP Pro is a smooth transition and will not affect your current programs or files if you use the following procedure:
1. Purchase a conventional "Retail Upgrade Version" [boxed] of Windows XP Professional.
2. Uninstall your antivirus program and SBS 2003.
3. Perform a backup of your important documents and files to a CD, DVD, or other backup media.
4. Disconnect all hardware peripheral devices, except the monitor, keyboard and mouse.
5. While running Windows XP Home, insert the Windows XP Pro CD in the drive and select the default "Upgrade" setup option. [Do not select "New Installation"]
6. Visit the Windows Update site to download all the critical updates.
7. Reinstall SBS 2003 and your antivirus program, then defrag your hard drive.

carey,
thanks, and sorry to be a pest, but i want to sure of the result before i start. i have a laptop running windows xp home edition. i have a server running microsoft small business server 2003. i want to be able to do two things with my laptop. first, i want to be able to connect to the domain for the small business server. i have been told that windows xp home additional does not support domain connect and that in order to do that i must be running windows xp pro. Second i want to be able to remotely administer the small business server from my laptop. the adminpak for sms 2003 requires windows xp pro as well. i therefore have to migrate my laptop from windows xp home to windows xp pro.
Am i correct in assuming that if i simply use the windows xp pro cd and select "upgrade" it will migrate my existing windows xp home edition to xp pro so that i don't have to reinstall all my programs again? i know that the data will not disappear, but i am very concerned about having to reinstall the 30 to 40 different programs that are now working under my windows xp home.

Yes, following the upgrade procedure I posted earlier will retain your programs, files and settings. However, as a precaution, I would recommend backing up your important personal files to a CD, DVD, or external hard drive.

Microsoft does not offer any trade-in program for Windows XP Home Edition.

If you wish to upgrade a current Windows XP Home Edition installation to Windows XP Professional, visit your favorite store that sells computer software and purchase a "Retail Upgrade Version" of Windows XP Professional.Monday, March 12, 2007 11:26 PMModerator
