  • Question

  • Every time I restart my PC, I get a WGA message saying im running counterfeit software BUT....
I run command prompt as admin.    type net start slsvc

then go to microsoft.com/genuine....   BAM my system is genuine..  I need to do this every time I restart my PC.  Its quite annoying.

Anybody know how to resolve this?    I need to post a screenshot of the report because when I click copy I get an error LoL

here is a link to the screen shot and report...

  • Hi racer831,

Since you don't get any error when you re-start the Service, we know the slsvc.exe (the file that runs the Service) is good.  And since after restarting the service, it stays running (untill you reboot) we know there isn't something activly trying to stop the Service (malware for example).

At this point, we just need to ensure the Service runs at Windows bootup. By default, that Service shouldbe set to run whenever Windows runs, but apperently somthing has changed.

    1) Click the 'Start' button
    2) Type: Services and hit the Enter key
    3) The Services window should now be open
    4) Scroll down till you see the 'Software Licensing' line and Right-Click on it and select 'Properties'
    5) In the middle of the screen you should see 'Startup Type:' select 'Automatic' or 'Automatic (Delayed Start)'
(NOTE: I am using Windows 7, so I am unsure which is the default setting for Vista, but either should work...But if one doesn't work, just change to the other)
    6) Click 'OK' and close the Services window.
    7) Reboot...the Service should now start with Windows and you should not receive the Non-Genuine message.

This should resolve your issue.  However, if you still have problems with this Service not running, you may need to contact Vista Support at http://support.microsoft.com. The reason is that even though that particular Service is part of the WGA sub-system, the Starting and Stopping Services is a core Windows function that I am not fully trained in so any deeper troubleshooting of that system would need to be done by Vista Support.

    Hope that helps,

  • Hi racer831,

Thank you for the screen shot, but I will need a full copy of the Diagnostic Report.  Just run the tool, hit 'Continue' then a few secs later, click 'Copy' (Note: you will see no visual indication that the report was copied...that is ok).

Come back to this thread and 'Paste' the report into a new post. The report is in plain text, so will paste into a post without any issue.

    Thank you,
    Darin MS
