What happened to the speed of Live Mesh Remote Desktop? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I used to use Live Mesh Remote Desktop all the time to help my parents with their computer issues.  It seems like it has been totally unusable for the past several months in that the slowness is unbearable.  15-30 seconds before the screen responds to each mouse click is just too long.  I'm using a very fast internet connection so I know that is not the problem.

I used to love this product and now it's so slow that it isn't useful at all.  Is this happening to everyone, or is it just me?

  • Do you mean that the problem persists even when you have both machines on the same LAN segment?
What security software is in use on the remote and host?

I suppose that you can submit a bug report with logs from both machines, but I'm not sure that it will get prompt attention. However, since you've been living with this a while, it may be worth a shot.

How to Submit Bugs and Live Mesh Logs

Note that you may not receive a response to the bug report, though. It will be transferred to the internal system to be assigned to the appropriate development group.

  • It's not happening to me. It could be caused by a router on either end, throttling by the ISP, network congestion, a firewall or antivirus software on either end, etc.

  • Well that's good, it means I have a chance at fixing it :)

I am running out of ideas for troubleshooting, though.  I've tried disabling all anti-virus on both ends and I'm using the same routers I used (on both ends) when Live Mesh RD ran very fast.  I don't think there are any ISP throttling or congestion issues considering that all my other interactions are very fast, and I show normal upload and download speeds while Live Mesh RD is tanking.

    Any other ideas for troubleshooting?

  • Did anything at all change in the environment on either side at around the time that you noticed it getting slow? No, I don't know that the ISP would be throttling RDP traffic. If anything, they might throttle P2P, but Live Mesh already keeps the data transfer fairly low on the bandwidth front.
Do you have another machine available that you can try to access via RD by installing Live Mesh on it? How about trying RD via Live Desktop from either end to see if the performance is the same, worse or better?
Any firewalls at either end other than Windows Firewall?

  • Thanks for the help Steve.

I've been working some more with it and I'm still experiencing a lot of slowness - to the point where it's unusable.  By unusable, I mean that more often I can't even click the File menu and choose Open because after clicking File the screen will never update so that I can click on Open.

Nothing has really changed at all on either side.  I've even tested by going out and coming back in the same router, which is the same router that was always there.

Anything I can do to help?

  • Hi Steve,

    Thanks for the replies.

Yes I do mean the problem persists even when on the same LAN segment, but I'm assuming Live Mesh sends the data back to Microsoft servers regardless of that.

Something I have noticed is that when Live Mesh stops refreshing the screen, if I click in an empty portion of the taskbar it will force it to update.  Strange.

    Thanks again.

  • Once you've established the connection, it no longer traverses the path to the server. That is only for the initial login to the service and identification of the remote location, as far as I know. When I use RD on the local LAN it is way speedier than if I use it over the Internet. I am quite sure that the route does not require a route to and from the Live Mesh server except to maintain the authentication and signed in state.

  • Oh and you still haven't reported back regarding security software which can have an impact on network traffic.
