"You don't have permission to open this [.mny] file" network access RRS feed

  • Question

  • I cannot open my .mny files from my wireless pc (Win7) connected to another pc on my home network (WinXP SP3)where the files are stored.  No problem opening the file from the XP pc on which the file is stored.  The .mny files are located in a shared "My Documents" folder.  I can work with other .pdf, .doc, etc files in the XP My Documents folder from the Win7 pc with no problem.

    Any help is appreciated.

  • Sorry, I forgot to mention I am using US version Money 99.  Should I still follow your suggestions above?

  • One quick way to find out: copy your .MNY file from the XP machine to the Win7 desktop and try opening it from there. Oh, and if you can still open it from the WinXP machine, do so and report the version number from Help|About.

Two comments: 1) there are many ways, it seems from my experience, that file sharing WinXP to Win7 can have issues. 2) Opening Money files over a network generally seems to cause way too many problems. Money was NEVER designed for it. I don't recommend it.

  • Money 2000 and earlier will not run under any 64-bit Windows. You will presumably make the change to 64-bit eventually.

Microsoft recommends the upgrade to Sunset http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/athome/microsoft-money.aspx. To do this from Money 99 you will need to install a trial version of Money for an intermediate file conversion step as described in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919524/en-us.
