Transferring WHS (both partitions) from one HDD to another RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, I am running an evaluation copy of Windows Home Server Power Pack 2, and I am absolutely loving it. I have it set up on a 2 year old HP Compaq Desktop, with a 150gb hard drive. When I purchase the license of WHS and two 500gb harddrives, I was wondering if there was any way that I could simply transfer the WHS operating system from the 150gb harddrive, and put it onto the 500gb harddrive. I would then get WHS to remove the drive (150gb HDD) and install the other 500gb HDD, to make the system have 1tb of storage capacity. Is there any way I can do this without having to re-install the full copy of WHS (which I will install on the 150gb HDD), or is it quicker to just transfer all the current data on the shared partition onto a computer on the network, and install WHS as a clean install with the two new harddrives, and then transfer all the existing data back onto the WHS (with 1tb storage)? I know this is a lot to ask, so I would be grateful...

    Many Thanks

  • There is no supported way to clone a functional Windows Home Server installation from one drive to another. That said, for your scenario, the best solution might be to clone the 120 GB drive onto the 500 GB drive as you propose, then immediately perform a server reinstallation using that 500 GB drive as the system drive. You would have to go through the reinstallation anyway; there's no way to simply "upgrade" the evaluation software to a fully licensed version of the product.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • Thank you for your answer - I have just checked the server, and I think I may be able to keep the 150gb HDD as the system drive, and install a full copy of WHS on it, and at the same time, add the two 500gb HDD's. I just need to buy a converter to allow me to put a 3.5 HDD into a 5.25 slot...

    Many Thanks
