WHS Reinstallation Issues RRS feed

  • Question

  • I was trying to upgrade from the evaluation to the full copy of WHS. Things were going well, then the install got stuck at 51 minutes remaining for about an hour. I clicked cancel and restarted. Only this time, I didn't have the option to do a reinstall, it only offered me a new install. The setup warns me that this will cause me to lost all my data on all my drives. I don't really see this as an option because (like a fool) I don't have backups.
So my first question is can I disconnect my non-system drives, put them in another computer, and pull the info off of them?
Second, is there a way that I can "trick" my system drive into thinking that there is a copy of WHS on there so I can try to run the reinstall option again?

  • Yes, you can connect your data disk to another computer and pull off the data. There's a hidden directory \DE\shares\... on each disk.
And no, I'm not aware of any trick to repeat the reinstall.

  • You can try connecting the system disk to another computer and deleting the 20 GB system partition.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
