Cannot Activate Windows Vista RRS feed

  • Question

  • Vista has been working fine for ~2 years.  Got a message a few days ago that an unauthorized system change occured and windows needs to validate.  On boot, I'm asked for product key to activate; error OxC004E003, Software Licensing Service reported that license activation failed.  Did the phone activation which didn't work; connected to a live person (those people in India (or wherever they are) have very poor english and are not helpful at all) and got the same 48 digit code with the same result; nothing.  Followed the resolution for OxC004E003 but I can only run in safe mode so I can't re-enter product registration key.  The company I bought the computer from, Everex, was bought by a tiawanese plastic company and US operations ceased.  I can only access the internet when I login normally and only the rest of the computer under safe mode.  Diagnostics below

  • If I intenionally mistype the confirmation ID, I get this message: "The confrimation ID you entered does not match the confirmation ID you recieved.  Please retype your confirmation ID."

I tried the suggestions for repairing the broken license store, but when I try to run the cmd.exe as administrator, i get an error saying there's not enough quota for the operation.

Did you talk to the support agent or use the automated system?
Do not enter anything at the automated voice and you should be connected to a support agent.

With regards to not being able to open cmd.exe, it is possible that there may be a virus or malware on your computer that is causing this problem and may also be causing the problem with activation. If possible, you may try running a full scan to be sure.

  • Hello, ghengis86

If you are now getting the error that the product key is already in use, rather than the previous error, you should be able to activate by calling the phone activation line and talk to the support agent once more.

  • Tried the phone activation and it says the confirmation ID is not correct.  I've listened to the code over and over, wrote it down; i'm not mistyping a number.  Still says the ID is not correct.

So here's what's happening now: when I log in, I"m asked if I want to enter the product, use phone activation or use the reduced ability mode to buy a new key.  I click on 'type in product key'.  It seems to accept the product key and goes to the "Activating Windows" window with status bar.  The status bar starts moving and then I get an error about software licensing and it asks if I want to use the phone activation system.  I do so, enter the numbers and then I get 'confirmation ID' incorrect.  Also, I haven't gone to the length of talking to the 'support' agent, since they only read back the code you get when you use the automated system.  They keep repeating that you need to make sure the numbers are correct, then hang up on you.  is there some secret word i need to utter to actually get some help with them?

WTF?  This is getting extremely annoying.

  • I work for a small tech company that does clean ups, repairs, builds, ect. Right now I have two computers in the shop with the same exact problem that the above user is facing.  Online activation fails.  Telephone activation says verified, but after typing in the confirmation id the computer replies that the confirmation id is invalid.  After having the automated system repeat the number, and 2 other callbacks to the automated system, it's left me stumped.  Something is damaged because under safe mode the activation screen doesn't pop up, and under computer properties it does say it's genuine.  Both computers are from different manufacturers, neither have been reloaded (original factory images).

I'm running a AVG livecd virus/malware scan on one currently, and if that doesn't solve the issue I will respond back.

  • nope, not a malware issue, nothing that AVG's liveCD detects, or Malwarebytes for that matter. Unless it's a new variant that nothing is picking up...

  • also, should be noted that in my issue, "msoobe/oobe /a" after using the largely undocumented sickykeys to get a link to get a screen to type the address "c:\windows\explorer.exe" doesn't take me to product activation, it takes me to the "set up windows screen" that asks me my country of origin, time, currency, keyboard layout, and a prompt to create a user name. Soo... what the deuce? sfc performed. no effect.
