Printer & File sharing quit again RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a laptop and desktop linked by wireless network.  There are two printers attached to the desktop.  Once again, the laptop can no longer access the files on the desktop or print to its printers.  Notice...once again.

Until last week, both computers could access files on each other and the laptop could print to the desktop's printers.  I have not changed any settings...only OneCare did a 'tuneup.'

The same problem occured several months ago following a tuneup to the laptop.  After the next scheduled tuneup everything suddenly worked again as expected.  In the meantime, I spent days and days wasting time my with support.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?  Any suggestions?

  • I've moved your post to the firewall topic as it isn't about the Printer Sharing functionality of OneCare, but the ability to use Windows File and Printer Sharing.

Yes, I have experienced this often. And, yes, it is highly annoying and I don't know the cause, but suspect that the firewall/network stack is getting into a broken state on occasion. I typically resolve it by turning the firewall off and back on again.

You may also want to check the settings in the firewall:

Open OneCare on each of the computers.

    Click Change Settings

On the firewall tab, click configure firewall

If the network is shown as Public, click Change Location to change it to "Home or Work."

    Click the Advanced Settings button

    Click Network connections tab.

If there are multiple active connections shown, you may need to disable the extras in your Windows network connections settings. (Network and Sharing Center, manage connections, in Vista; Right click My Network Places and select Properties on the Start menu in XP)

On the Ports and Protocols tab, add a check mark next to File and Printer Sharing - for subnet and Internet if the first setting alone (after all of the above are verified) does not allow Sharing to work.

If all of the above fail, please contact support.

  • Hi,

I am also having problems sharing files and printers on my Live OneCare setup.
"File and Printer Sharing - for subnet and Interne" is not checked in my settings, my question is will checking this setting allow others to be able to get into my home network via the internet?

    Thanks,

  • WH2,

    I'm not a security expert, so I can't say.

According to OC Support, the correct settings are:

On the Firewall/Advanced Settings/Ports and Protocols tab

    check...File/Printer Sharing...ICMP Outbound, ICMPv4 Inbound, Network Discovery

I have "fixed" my problem.  I isolated the issue to the host where the printer is attached.  Rather than deal with support again, I did a restore to a copy of my settings from the week before the last Tune Up on the desktop and everything works like before.

    Good luck,

    Gerry

If the PC is behind a router, no. If you take the PC to a public network or are connected directly to the Internet, it depends on your sharing settings. If they are password protected Shares, the shared files (not the entire PC) are exposed, but not able to be accessed without and ID and password.
