Movies for WHS 2011 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi to every one.

first time WHS 2011 user and its my first post need some help.

I want to copy my dvd's to server. i tried but i am not successfull. now here what i have

    <<Server Side >>

i installed mymovies but some how it is restricted due to it needs 2500 points. so i stop using this.

    << Client Side >>

i have 3 computers XP, Vista and Win 7.

i installed DVDFab and converted DVD and saved directly to server "Movies" folder.

Now i need help and my Questions are

    1.  what i do to play this movie or stream on client computer.

    2.  when i see shared movie folder it has sub folder with name of "BATMAN_YEAR_ONE" then it has some differnet files in side it. I think it should be only one file there. Also it does not show in Video Library.

    3.  What is best format to ripp/copy DVD to shared folder. i mean AVI, ISO or any thing else?

    4. Can any one help me what should i do on server side and what should i do on client side. what are the steps?

I am googling since last 7 days but i did not find any help.

  • Simply ripping the files from a DVD will not result in content you can stream, no. As for the formats that are supported, take a look at this page from the Windows Home Server 2011 online help, and this one from Microsoft support. Probably the "best" format is .wmv for video, and .wma for audio, because those are guaranteed to use a codec that will be fully supported on the server, but there are other options.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • ok i coverted in wmv (in dvdfab there are so many device options and i dont know which one i have to chose). when i play on computer it start playing but when i increase the screen size, picture quality was very bad and choppy and that quality can not be played on 42 inches screen.

Also when i copy that movie in WHS 2011 Movies folder (its shared folder and streaming is on in setting) it does not show in Media Library (Browse Videos)  on the right side of screen in Remote web access.

For infos. i want to convert my all DVDs, so i can watch (stream) them on any computer, PS3, Sony Blue Rays DVD player attached with home network.

Ken Warren (great helping guy) gave me idea but i am not succesful.

Pls jump in if any one else know how to do this.

  • MP4 container with h.264 video with AAC audio works well. DVD Catalyst 4 does the trick in very few mouse clicks.

  • This is what I do:

I use MakeMKV ( http://www.makemkv.com/ ) to rip the DVD or Blueray to my hard drive. I then use Handbrake ( http://handbrake.fr/ ) to convert it from a .mkv to a .mv4. I then place it in a folder in the "Movies" share on the server. Next, I use the dvdxml client from http://www.dvdxml.com to create a .dvdid.xml file which is placed in the same dirctory as the .m4v file.

I personally use Windows Media Center to watch the movies... If you don't, you don't need the .dvdid.xml file.

Also, if you want to watch the .mkv files you will need the right codecs on the client sde. I use Shark007's codecs becuase it seems to be the simplest way to set things up. You can get that @: http://shark007.net/ .mkv files are much bigger, but if you have the disk space, it much higher quality...
