"error code: 0x80070002" a problem prevents windows from checking the license RRS feed

  • Question

I ran SFC /SCANNOW on my wifes computer. It asked for the XP install disk which came from a long gone dealer and was corrupted. I used my install disk thinking it would only use the required files, dumb. Upon reboot I got ec: 0x8007000 “a error is preventing windows from accurately checking the license for this computer”. I was locked out.

I can only use safe mode without network services. The following is the report from MGADIAG.

  • Hello Herb,

Thank you for visiting the Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) program forum. I understand the inconvenience you are currently experiencing. We have seen numerous issues from customers who were provided a Volume License Key (VLK) on their computer that has either been blocked by Microsoft or generated by a fake product key code generator. WGA currently provides checks for these types of product keys and prompts the user to notify them of this situation. More invalid product keys are being identified daily and WGA is constantly refreshing its database with these newly identified product keys and immediately blocks them. Right now, your computer has a Volume License (VL) edition of Windows XP Professional identified.

As a rule, VL editions should not be sold to individual consumers. Businesses, schools and governments normally use VL editions for flexibility in installing many computers Also, Volume Licenses for Windows XP is Upgrade licenses ONLY and cannot be used as the original or base license for a new computer.  Unfortunately the business where you purchase XP Professional from is not longer. I would encourage you to visit http://www.microsoft.com/piracy and file a piracy report. Also please visit http://www.howtotell.com and compare your media against the genuine and non-genuine copies found on this Microsoft site. You have a couple options first you should have been presented with "Get Genuine" when you validated Windows. You can purchase Windows XP for 1/2 the original price or maybe purchase an OEM System builder version of Vista. Unfortunately XP is no long for sale unless a store has some still on their shelf.

    Take care,

    Stephen Holm
