  • The messages do finish importing - but then a window says "all messages have been imported to microsoft windows mail format" - then I go to the inbox - but even after re-booting - there are no messages in my inbox from the back-up ??

  • I started and installed Windows Mail as my default mail client immediately when I bought my new computer. Then I transferred windows mail (and all other files) from my old hard drive to my new computer.  When I try to transfer or import my address book & messages I get a window that says it can't transfer because Windows Mail is already running.  Can I uninstall & re-install Windows Mail ??  How can I get my current Windows Mail off of the computer and get the previous Windows Mail installed ??

  • Do you mean Windows Mail (which comes installed on Vista) or Windows Live Mail (available from http://download.live.com as part of Windows Live Essentials)?
You should not need to uninstall either. What is giving you the message about transferring? If you have already configured Windows Live Mail on the new PC, you need to use the import feature of WLM and point to the location where OneCare restored the data to - typically C:\Windows Live OneCare Restore\ for files that already existed on the PC you restored to.

  • I mean windows mail (not windows live mail)- I had windows mail on my old computer and I had all files transferred to my new computer. I can't get the windows mail files transferred to my current windows mail.
Should I try to use Windows Live Mail instead of Windows Mail ??

  • Steve-
I imported the messages into Windows Live Mail - they are listed on the left hand side under storage folders- Approx. 50 Folders are listed.
But when I click on the inbox - or any one of the folders- it says "There are no items in this view" - All folders are empty- the inbox is empty - no emails- no contacts- nothing.
My old computer had Vista as OS - My new computer has Vista OS.

I'm not computer savvy- but I read about renaming the files to the .eml extension ??
    Please advise.

  • Sorry for not replying sooner, 9005.
You can get help from Support - http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/onecareinstallandactivate/thread/30400b52-7f26-4ba0-bc18-17e305329d90 - since you continue to have problems with the OneCare restore process. The folders should not be empty if they had messages in them within the backed up data. Windows Live Mail (and Windows Mail) stores messages as .eml files within folders in a hidden directory on the drive. OneCare backup backs these up and restores them. The import should be fairly straighforward, but something isn't working correctly in your case.
