After upgrade from Office 2010 to Office 2013 cannot insert object in Word when files are stored in SharePoint 2010 library.

Our environment is Windows 7 with Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010. User has 4 word documents stored in the same SharePoint document library. Three of the documents are inserted into the fourth document as an Object with "Link to file" checked. This creates a merged document that is updated anytime the other 3 documents are updated. This was working fine. After upgrading to Office 2013 now get the error "The program used to create this object is Package. That program is either not installed on your computer or it is not responding. To edit this object, install Package or ensure that any dialog boxes in Package are closed." If the documents are moved to the local drive or a shared drive the functionality works. Only get the error when the documents are in the SharePoint document library. Also, when the documents are in the SharePoint document library, if the "Link to file" is not checked the document imports, but will not update if modified. Process being used: Open Word document>Click Insert>Click Object>Click Object>Click Create from File>Browse>select file>Insert>Select Link to file>Click OK> receive the above error.
