Accessing a network share on same host PC RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi there,

I have a very simple question today

    PC-1 has a Shared folder:

    • Folder path:  "d:\Shared" on PC-1
    • Network path: "\\PC-1\Shared"

While network share's main purpose is to have access over the network, what is the difference between the two ways I am accessing that shared folder on host PC-1:

    1. Browsing to the actual local path on PC-1 ( d:\Shared )
    2. Browsing through the network path on PC-1 ( "\\PC-1\Shared" )

in case 2, does it require network to be active?

Another subsidiary question is what is the difference between them:

    1. \\<hostname>\\<anySharedResource>    ( e.g. "\\PC-1\Shared" )
    2. \\<IP-Address>\\<anySharedResource>    ( e.g. "\\192.168.anything.anyhting\Shared" )

    Kindly reply
