Windows Messenger is definitely NOT something you want to be using – it has not been updated for way too long, and has been superseded by Windows Live Messenger.

  • Windows Messenger 5.1 for Microsoft Windows XP is no longer supported.  Suggest you consider upgrading to a modern Windows 7 operating system.  Download and run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to see if your PC is ready for Windows 7. Once you've installed Windows 7, you can download and install Windows Live Messenger.

The OP can install Windows Live Messenger in XP, Carey – without the hassle of attempting an upgrade on a machine that may not support Win7
