Laptop Freezes After Memory Upgrade

I upgraded the RAM in my Thinkpad T41 from 512MB to 2GB (max). The system freezes in all modes except for Safe Mode so I assume it's a software or device driver incompatibility. The OS is Windows 2000 SP4. No device conflicts show in Device Manager. Any suggestions?
