  • The problem wit this is that a forum can exist in more than one group. Furthermore, a forum can exist on more than one brand. For search engien optimization reasons, we only expose each forum to search engines once, and only on one brand.

  • The SharePoint ones (English language) as far as I know are under two groups. However these are identical apart from one of them being msdn and the other technet and any search would therefore only need to specify either the mdsn or the technet group to get all the SharePoint (English) forums.

    Or did I misunderstand you?

  • This is not a newsgroup and never will be, that is why it is good.

Any newsgroups can be in addition to meaning certain newsgroup pages can be "dropped" in favour of the forum.

  • The newsgroup reference was just to explain the concept.

The forums should be better (= offer more functionality) than the newsgroups. In most cases they do, but in this case the poor choice of URLs means that you can not easily (= without specifying each one) search a set of forums even if Microsoft group these forums together in their forum system.

This post is a suggestion for improvement to the forum software (as the description of the forum says), it was never a flame post about newsgroups being better than forums which is what you seem to be reading it as being.

  • The more forums the better I think.

E.G. Media Player, Internet Explorer, Windows Mail, etc all need their own subforums under the new Answers Forum.

  • I too would like to see forums better structured and search of appropriate forum and inside forums changed.

As they grow it is more and more difficult to find the necessary information.

For instance WPF forum I am sure has to have sub-forum DataGrid(s) which has to be accessible from inside WPF forum not from Forums Homepage or something.

Also I personally do not like new MSDN search. Perhaps I dont know how to use it however I cant use it. Search results most of time arent helping. Sometime I resort to plane google search to find an answer in MSDN.

I unfortunately cant advise on what would be better but it definitely doesnt work for me. Even filters on results dont help  (although this is powerful solution and has to work!).

P.S. however I dont have any problem with URLs. Sorry for hi-jacking :)
