Why do I suddenly get a validation error?

Question
-
After 2 years of use on my home PC I suddenly get a validation error? I purchased the computer in good faith from a retailer, believing all the software is legit. However I am unable to find any media or sticker in the information provided to me. Could you please advise what I should do, and in particular will this eventually shut down my computer or cause me to lose my applications? Or is this just a hoax to sell a product?
Diagnostic tool gave the following information:

Hello NLC2708,
This is no hoax.
The XP and Office currently installed on your computer were installed using Volume License Keys (VLK).
1) To get a VLK, you are required to sign a Volume License Agreement with Microsoft for multiple licenses (usually 100 to 1000+ installs of Office or Windows). Once you pay for the many copies of the software, you get a single key to allow you to install them all.
You did not mention in your post that you have a Volume License Agreement with Microsoft for your Windows or Office.
2) The Office Professional Edition 2003 is showing an error of 114. That error will only show when one (1) particular Volume License Key is used. That VLK key was leaked from Microsoft. It was for it's own employees to use.
You did not mention in your post that you worked for Microsoft.
I'm not trying to be harsh, I just wanted to highlight that this is, in fact, not a hoax. Your Office is Non-genuine and your Windows will probably go Non-Genuine once Microsoft sees that key has been leaked to the internet (do an Internet search for the last 15 digits of the Windows Product key seen in your Diagnostic Report D2R7C-PBP3Y-B4G7M...you will see 10+ pages of websites that show that key).
At this point, you have a couple of options.
1) First, look for a sticker on the side or bottom of the computer. It's called a COA sticker and would have a Product Key on it and the name of the Windows Version that key is good for. If you find such a sticker, then that Product Key is Licensed to be used on that computer in the version of Windows indicated on the sticker.
2) If possible, contact the person or company that sold you the computer and demand the Genuine Microsoft software you paid for.
3) last option would be to buy a genuine copy of Windows and/or Office from a trusted Retailer (the Non-Genuine message should direct you to an area you can buy a copy of Office at a substantial discount (same for Windows once it shows as Non-Genuine)
To answer your last question, regardless of the software's Genuine status, no functionality will be removed from your Office or XP. They will just keep informing you that they are Non-genuine (XP's desktop background may turn black, but that is only so the white Non-Genuine message, in the lower right corner, can be more easily read)
I hope this was helpful,

Thanks for your help Darin. I know I have a legit Windows Office product as I have the cd etc - but it does appear the XP is counterfeit. Allowing that we had planned to upgrade to Windows 7 within the next couple of months - will there be a problem in upgrading a non-genuine product? Will I need to buy a complete Windows 7 rather than just the upgrade?Sunday, November 1, 2009 1:14 AM

Hello NLC2708,
Windows 7 will not upgrade a nongenuine installation of XP or Vista. You will need to purchase a full retail or OEM license for 7.
Your computer has two installations of Office 2003, Office Pro which is the nongenuine volume licensing installation, and Office Standard which is a retail license of Office that is not activated. If you uninstall the nongenuine Pro then activate the Standard, you can then check and make sure that Standard validates as Genuine at www.microsoft.com/genuine

Thanks Dan. Since I did the diagnostic I have installed my genuine Office Pro - I had that on hand as a multiple computer/license (or whatever they are called when you buy for more than 1 computer) from when I bought my laptop computer (which is all genuine!).
So guess I will be purchasing a complete Windows 7 early next year - just need to wait and see what the feedback for Microsoft 7 is now that people are using it.

Hello NLC2708,
A full retail license for Office Professional allows two simultaneous installations, on the product owner's laptop and desktop computers.
It is likely that the installation of Office Standard that was on the computer but not yet activated was a Genuine license, since it was reported as a retail license. We see very few instances of Validation problems with retail licenses.
Feel free to post a fresh mgadiag report so we can confirm that you're back to being 100% genuine. :-)
