  • Hi,

Microsoft maintains a copy of the We Got Served Top 10 Downloaded list here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/windowshomeserver/add-ins.mspx

  • You'll do better if you experiment with your server a bit and determine what (few) items you think are missing that would be extremely useful/essential, then find the add-ins that add those features. Don't install an add-in just because it sounds cool or because someone else says you need it. Especially, don't install an add-in just because it gives a bunch of additional ways to tweak areas of your server that Microsoft didn't expose; Microsoft didn't expose those controls for a reason. Sometimes that reason is just that it's difficult to simplify the interfaces enough for a non-technical user, but sometimes it's because a lack of knowledge of how Windows Home Server differs from othr Microsoft operating systems may result in severe issues.

For myself, that's avast! for WHS, which gives me central control of virus protection through my entire house, and an early version of a Wake On LAN add-in that's since gone commercial, so I can make sure my wife's PC occasionally does get scanned and backed up (she won't see to it herself, and always shuts it down completely when she's not using it). I also have the server component of a book/CD/DVD cataloging tool on my server, and I have an iTunes streaming server (Firefly) because all my digital audio is in Apple Lossless. Nothing else is essential for me.

And the We Got Served top 10 list that Sam linked is a good one. Just don't install everything on it "just because." :)
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
