What is best way to backup the WHS to external drive RRS feed

  • Question

  • My plan is to have 2 external drives and alternate them weekly to provide "off-site" protection.

Has anyone used the Server Backup "built-in" to PP1? I looked around at the help files, but I can't really tell how it works. Would I be better off to just use a Scheduled Task to call a robocopy /mir batch file for each share?

If the robocopy option, can I also have it copy the folder containing the PC Backups? Would I have to have the batch file stop and restart the service if I make sure the task only runs outside of the backup window?

Any other suggestions or things I should consider or watch for?

    Thanx in advance.

  • Use the Server Backup within WHS. It is not automatically scheduled, but it is incremental. It will only update the new files.

It does not copy the backups. There is, however, an addon to save a copy of your backup database. I don't believe it is automatically scheduled either

  • Hi.

The Add-In and documents is available here.

Note that any drive you want to use for these backups has to be installed specifically for that use.
When you are installing a new drive, the drive Wizard will ask you if you want to use this drive as part of the Storage Pool, or as a Backup drive.

  • Can you tell us which add-in will copy the backups incrementally?

  • I use 2 external drives for backing up the Server (using the PP1 backup functionality) and the Backup database (using the add-on referenced in the above posts).

    All works great!
