Failure to Validate Office XP Error 0x80180101 RRS feed

  • Question

  • We just tried to download the latest security updates for Office XP.   A new version of the Office Genuine Validation was downloaded first.

We get an error message 0x80180101 and an indication the Publisher has been validated but not Office XP.

The other Office programs were installed by the manufacturer at the same time as Publisher from Office XP Professional.  We have not moved the software from this machine and have downloaded updates until the latest version of "Genuine Validation."  Each of the Office programs (Word, etc.) indicates the product is activated.  We still have the Pffice XP Professional installation CDs with the original key amd the MS Certificate of Authenticity.

Despite claims to the contrary this seems to be a bug in MS validation that is preventing us from keeping our GENUINE MICROSOFT product from getting critical security updates.

Please help us fix this bug in your software.

    Thanks.

  • This is not a reply, this is an add to.

I get the same error #0x80180101

Under the validation results, I get 2 boxes.  A green box for Office Pro 2003 which says:

The product(s) listed above completed validation.  However, as a result of the failed or incomplete validation listed below--------

    The Red box which says:

Microsoft FrontPage 2002:  Validation incomplete:  Office must be activated.

I don't have Office 2002 anymore.  When I click on Front page, Its says it is activated.

    Whats the fix?

If the above steps did not resolve your issue lets continue with the steps below.

I would like to provide some of the self-help options we have made available for our customers to address these issues. If you could please follow the steps outlined below; the diagnostics Web Site will attempt to resolve the validation errors you are experiencing with Office.

    http://www.microsoft.com/Genuine/diag/RunDiags.aspx?displayLang=en

Next follow the on-screen prompts to resolve the issue if any of the checks at the above site fail. You can do this by choosing the “Resolve Now” button if it appears. If, after attempting to resolve the issue as per the instructions on the above site fails, please refer to the link below and run the MGA Diagnostics tool:

    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

You will be prompted to either “Run” or “Save” the tool. Choose to “Run” the tool and follow the on-screen prompts. You will receive an “Internet Explorer-Security Warning” dialog box for the “Windows Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool”; you must choose to “Run” this tool when prompted.

Once you are presented with the Diagnostics tool choose “Continue” to run the diagnostic report. If the “RESOLVE” button is available after running the diagnostics, please click “RESOLVE” to allow the diagnostic tool to attempt a repair.

    1.      After running the MGA Diagnostic tool, click on the “Windows” tab and then click on “Copy”.

    2.      Please return to this post and “Paste” the results here for additional review.

  • Scouterbsa,

First I want to say thank you providing the diagnostic results. This affords us an opportunity to perform an in-depth analysis as what could be the cause of your conflict/s. In turn we will attempt to provide a solution to resolve the problem/s you are experiencing. There are a couple dynamics happening. First it appears you have Front Page 2002 (stand alone office product ) and MS Office 2003 nstalled and running on your system, according to the diagnostic report. Second you are receiving an Office Status Code: 101 not activated. Front Page isn't activated. PLease activate Front Page and restart the computer. Then activate Office and restart the computer. This should resolve the situation which you are experiencing.

Please follow the steps to attempt resolving activation issue. Open My Computer located on your desktop

    1.  Go to: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Data\

NOTE:  The application data file may be hidden. Use the Tools drop down menu and follow:  Folder Options->View->Hidden Files and Folders->Show Hidden Files and Folders to show the folder. Please re-hide the files once you have completed all the steps.
    2.  Right click the data.dat file, then click “Delete”.  (Also you may rename the file data.dat and move from the folder).
    3.  This data.dat file is for Office (not OGA)
    4.  Once the file has been deleted, open an Office application such as MS Word and “ACTIVATE” it.
    5.  If product activation was successful try the Office Genuine Advantage (OGA). Please launch the following link and begin the OGA process again: (this is the OGA part; Office Genuine Advantage):  http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/office/Validate.aspx?displaylang=eng

The following Knowledge Base Articles can provide more information for Office Activation issues:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/903275/en-us
Here you will find links for various resolutions which you may encounter. Also reference the following site for various telephone activation centers:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326851. Please re-post here should you need further assistance.

Last if you still have problems after uninstalling MS Outlook 2002 please read further. Attached below is a Knowledge Base (KB) article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301. This will allow you to download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and explain detailed information. Use the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and uninstall all Microsoft Office programs in question on your computer, then reinstall Microsoft Office using the genuine MS Office installation CD and product key.

Did this work?  I look forward to the outcome at your earliest opportunity. Thank you and have a great day!

    Thank you

    Kenny,

Thank you for posting your diagnostic information. Diagnostic results help our team in determining the root cause of your issue. We are sorry to hear about the problem your currently experiencing. I can see right away what the issue is and why you are not passing validation. Unfortunately, the product key used to install your Office Suite is a Volume License Key (VLK) that has been blocked per the request of the legal VLK holder.  As a rule, VLK editions of either an Operating System and/or Office should not be sold to individual consumers. Businesses, schools and governments normally use VLK editions for flexibility in installing many computers. Also, Volume Licenses for Windows XP and MS Office are Upgrade licenses ONLY and cannot be used as the original or base license for a new computer.

This is why you may be seeing the "Software Counterfeiting" messages on your computer.  You will need to uninstall Office before any further complications occur from being non-genuine. As a customer there are available options you may choose for a resolution. For details on the ways to “Get Genuine”, see the web page that outlined your validation failure details or http://www.microsoft.com/genuine .  It will provide all of the possible steps which you can take.

First, if this comes as a total surprise to you, please visit the retailer where you purchased the computer or operating system and let them know the operating system is a counterfeit copy.  Please print a copy of the diagnostic report so you may show them proof for the VLK status. Request they immediately reimburse you and/or provide a Genuine Copy.

Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) is here to help protect YOU, our valued customer. It is important for more people like you to report piracy @ http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/default.mspx  who have become victims. Microsoft legal will follow up on all leads provided.  Submitting piracy reports will assist in stopping unscrupulous business practices.  You may be eligible for free software if you have high quality counterfeit discs. We CANNOT determine the "Quality" level of non-Genuine submissions and cannot guarantee such a thing here on the forum. We have a 3rd party registered Cryptography lab who evaluates EVERY (really!) submission for the High-Quality Counterfeit replacement program - as they have a pre-determined subset of items they look for.

Again, we are sorry to hear about your situation. Please be sure to backup or otherwise offload any data from the hard disk because a clean installation/reimaging will destroy all personal user data on the hard drive. Please don't hesitate re-posting if you need further assistance.

    Thank you

  • Stephen,

This product was purchased from SoftwareOutlet.com for use in our office.  We purchased, I beleive, 3 or 5 licenses at that time.  I am surprised that this is a problem.  We are a Catholic Church and may not be able to afford to upgrade all our licenses.  Any other options?

  • I have resolved this problem on my computer. No action by MS needed.

I was surprised that my original message on the problem from 8-16 (today is 8-22) was not acknowledged within six days, but, fortunately, no harm resulted.

  • Kenny1,

We are very sorry to hear about your situation. Have you submitted a piracy report as yet? My previous post gave instructions for reporting a piracy incident.  All reports are reviewed by the piracy team.

Kenny there are other options available for your church. Below is information about purchasing volume licensing agreements for your church.  Please review the following link:  http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/contact/default.mspx. Here you will find the phone number.  Select option 3 then option 1. I called the phone number and posed the question you posted in the forum.  The Microsoft representative can more than assist you with your question. Microsoft Giving Programs are also available. The following URL will provide guidance for how to apply

http://www.microsoft.com/about/corporatecitizenship/citizenship/giving/apply/default.mspx. This link has some great information which may also further assist your organization. Hope this helps :-).

Also don't forget about filing a piracy report for the previous situation your experiencing. Thank you and we hope this information will help you.

    Moon,

We request all users initially run the Genuine Diagnostics tool to try and identify the issue you may be having.

Download and run the utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 , then click the Windows tab, Copy to Clipboard, then paste the report into a New Post on this Forum.

Step 2 is tell us about the COA. Tell us:
    1. What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center?
    2. Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?
    3. Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?
    4. DO NOT post the Product Key.
    5. Please also provide a short description of the issue you are experiencing.

NOTE: The data collected with the Genuine Diagnostics Tool does NOT contain any information that can personally identify you and can be fully reviewed, by you, before being posted.

    Thank you,

  • Hello Paul,

Thank you for posting your diagnostic information. We are sorry to hear about the problem your currently experiencing. Diagnostic results help our team in determining the root cause of your issue. Windows XP Pro and Office product keys installed on this computer was not assigned by Microsoft. The key is counterfeit and was most likely generated by a key generator. The product key found on your computer has been detected on multiple computers. Product keys are only allowed to be used on one computer unless otherwise specified in the end user licensing agreement (EULA).  Below could be a possible scenario.

There are situations which can cause Windows and Office to become non-genuine. Let me give one example.  Customers have taken in their systems along with all the software received when purchasing their system. The customer picks up the system and viola' no problems whatsoever until they need to download an update or even a template used with MS Office. Suddenly their system is non-genuine. The customer's computer was not installed with their software but either a blocked Volume Licensing Key (VLK) or a keygen’d product key. Also the software could work for several weeks, months or even a year or more then suddenly becomes blocked.

This is why you may be seeing the "Software Counterfeiting" messages on your computer. You will need to uninstall Windows XP Pro and Office before any further complications occur from being non-genuine. As a customer there are several options available for you to get Genuine. For details on the ways to “Get Genuine”, see the web page that outlined your validation failure details or http://www.microsoft.com/genuine .  It will provide all of the possible steps which you can take. Also please review the Validation Advisor for further guidance at:

    https://www.microsoft.com/genuine/selfhelp/ValidationHelp.aspx

First, if this comes as a total surprise to you, please visit the retailer where you purchased the computer or operating system and let them know the operating system is a counterfeit copy.  Please print a copy of the diagnostic report so you may show them proof for the VLK status. • Deryni,

Hopefully this will answer your question. I will briefly define the process's.

Activation = Product Activation. This is the process by which you “turn on” your software and can be done over the Internet or by Telephone.

Validation = Windows Genuine Advantage is a service that informs the user their Windows is Genuine Microsoft Software or not and it is only seen if the user is trying to download from download.microsoft.com (and other sites) or if the user installed the WGA Notifier.

Are you still not able to see the activation wizard whatsoever? Have you tried un installing then reinstalling? You are being asked to re-activate Office. There are two ways internet and telephone activation. Sounds like you are having more problems than what I can provide you so this is why I provided you with the other links and forums to post your question. Hopefully I have been able to clairfy more?

    thank you

  • Megan,

Your issue appears to be outside the scope of the Genuine Advantage forum. In an attempt to assist I would like to provide the following information. Please review knowledge base article (KB) How to troubleshoot problems that you may experience when you try to activate a 2007 Office product @:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919895, and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/903275/en-us for Office Suites 2003 and below.  The links will provide resolutions supporting Office Suites. However if the issue persists I would recommend you contact Microsoft Office support at http://support.microsoft.com/gp/assistsupport and choosing your product to create a support incident.

There are two methods for activating Office; telephone and the Internet which is the easier of the two methods. To activate the product by using the Internet, follow these steps:

For Microsoft Office 2007, follow these steps:

    1)      Start any office program.

    2)      In the Office Activation Wizard, click the “Activate by using Internet” option, and then click “Next”.

    3)      Click “Submit” to send your information to the Microsoft licensing servers.

NOTE:  When your information is validated, the “Activation Complete” page appears.  Then, you can use the Office programs.  You will not have to activate Office in the future.

    4)      Click “Finish”

Please follow the below guidance for telephone activation for your version of Office:

    1)      Start any Office program.

    2)      In the “Office Activation Wizard”, click the “Activate by using the telephone” option, and then click Next

    3)      Read the “Microsoft Office Privacy Policy” page, and then click “Next”.
Note You are not required to read the Microsoft Office Privacy Policy to continue these steps in Microsoft Office 2007. A link to the Microsoft Office Privacy Policy is provided so that you can read it at any time.

    4)      In the “Select your location” list, select a country or region. Call the telephone number that is listed on line 2. The customer service agent will ask you for the installation ID and will give you a confirmation ID in return. Type the confirmation ID in the boxes provided.

    5)      Click “Next”.

    6)      On the “Activation Complete” page, click “Finish”.

Please reference the following site for activation and registration centers for Microsoft products:   http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326851 .  The KB article will provide numbers to call for activating Microsoft products.  Should you need further guidance please post your question/s to the Windows XP General newsgroup forum located here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/newsgroups/reader.mspx?query=activation&dg=microsoft.public.windowsxp.general&cat=en-us-ms-winxp&lang=en&cr=US&pt=&catlist=B0DE109D-10E1-4C3C-BCC9-8EB7A22FC6A0&dglist=&ptlist=&exp=&sloc=en-us .

    Thank you,

  • This is not a reply, this is an add to.

I get the same error #0x80180101

Under the validation results, I get 2 boxes.  A green box for Office Pro 2003 which says:

The product(s) listed above completed validation.  However, as a result of the failed or incomplete validation listed below--------

    The Red box which says:

Microsoft FrontPage 2002:  Validation incomplete:  Office must be activated.

I don't have Office 2002 anymore.  When I click on Front page, Its says it is activated.

    Whats the fix?

  • Foreman,

I understand the inconvenience you are currently experiencing and would like to provide you with some self-help options we have made available for our customers to address the issue you are currently experiencing. Please follow the steps outlined below as it could either resolve your issue or, if need be, provide us with additional information to determine the cause of this issue.

    1) Ensure you log onto the computer experiencing the issue with “Administrator” rights.

    2) Next we would like to confirm that you are running the most current version of the Genuine Advantage control on your computer. In order to do this please follow the below link and choose the “Validate Office” option.

    http://www.microsoft.com/genuine

    Thank you

  • I believe that fixed it, thank you!!  Office 2002 wasn't installed.  Just Front Page 2002.  I have that by itself, as when I* got Office, it wasn't in the package.

    Thanks again

Despite running authentic Microsoft Software I continue to receive the above failure to validate error for Outlook 2002.  I believe that it is because I am running Office 2000 combined with Outlook 2002.  I upgraded to Outlook 2002 because I purchased an HP PDA device and it required Outlook 2002.  Can you please help because I require the latest updates for security reasons?

I ran the diagnostic at  http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/RunDiags.aspx?displaylang=en&cnt=1

Passed Validation Self-help: Data.dat Corruption check

The report I see says, under Office, "101 not activated", however when I go to "Activate Product" under each of the following programs, I get a "Product already activated" message, but Office update still shows validation failure:

    Microsoft Office Tools

    Access

    Outlook

    Powerpoint

    Piblisher

    Word.

    JDK,

How are you doing? It appears Outlook 2002 isn't activated. Basically you can activate Outlook over the internet or via telephone call. Below I am sending some information for you to read as well as keep should the need ever arise again. There is one KB article which will give detailed information for various versions of Office etc.  Post back in this thread should you need further assistance.

    Stephen Holm, MS

Your issue appears to be outside the scope of the Genuine Advantage forum. In an attempt to assist I would like to provide the following information, however if the issue persists I would recommend you contact Microsoft Office support at http://support.microsoft.com/gp/assistsupport and choosing your product to create a support incident.

Please reference the following site for activation and registration centers for Microsoft products:   http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326851.  Please reference the following KB Article “How to troubleshoot problems that you may experience when you try to activate an Office product” located here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/903275/en-us.   Here you will find links for resolutions supporting various Office Suites. Please re-post here should you need further assistance. Thank you and have a great day!

Request they immediately reimburse you and/or provide a Genuine Copy.

Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) is here to help protect YOU, our valued customer. It is important for more people like you, who have become victims, to report piracy @ http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/default.mspx  . Microsoft legal will follow up on all leads provided.  Submitting piracy reports will assist in stopping unscrupulous business practices.  You may be eligible for free software if you have high quality counterfeit discs.

Again, we are sorry to hear about your situation. Please be sure to backup or otherwise offload any data from the hard disk because a clean installation/reimaging will destroy all personal user data on the hard drive. Please don't hesitate re-posting if you need further assistance.

    Thank you,

    Hi Stephen,

I am using XP Students and Teachers. It is activated (or so I thought!) on 3 computers.  I recall that I needed to call in the first two times I activated (which was annoying), but for the latest laptop purchased, the activation went through online without a hitch back in November 2006.

It has been running on this machine for about 3 1/2 years.  I am now receiving 101 not activated.  The office applications are all telling me it is activated.

Comparing my diagnostics with the first poster's, it looks like Office isn't activated while Word is (which was part of the office package) so I'm confused.  I'm nervous to just go ahead and try removing the data.dat file as everything is working fine, I just wanted to check for any updates.

    Any help would be appreciated!

    Thanks.

    Ron.

  • OK, here's an update.

I got "gutsy" and decided to proceed with attempting to resolve this.

    I renamed C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Data\data.dat to data.dat_orig

I ran Word, and the activation wizard appeared.

I activated the product with 2 clicks.

    Activation was immediately successful.

I re-tested at the OGA web page and passed.

    Thanks for your previous advice.

I know it's not YOU, Stephen and I am very grateful to you (and your bosses that allow you to be here), but I for one have not had a very positive experience overall with MS product activation.  It is highly annoying, I found it insulting to be forced to justify my installation of purchased software to someone overseas during phone activation, I found the overseas activation folks to be barely understandable (their accents were very strong, I have managed several technology groups that have had many foreign nationals over the years.) I found the page where it said (paraphrased) "Only a handful of legitimate users have failed the test" to be HIGHLY insulting.

I have been a staunch defender of MS for the quality of your operating systems and their ability to work with nearly every mongrel piece of hardware, and the inexpensive nature of your office products (3 licenses for my kids/family for $149??? How cheap can you get?) but this activation stuff really burns me up.  They should toss some more money at it and improve the process (Like, what would have it taken to attempt a re-activation process automatically behind the scenes for me??) or get rid of it.  Please.

I hated the smarmy "survey" that popped up while I was trying to work through this process, too, with questions like  "How did you feel when you were told you didn't have a legitimate copy"  "What are you going to do now?".  Again, just how insulting can you get?

"What will I do?" it asked.  I dunno, but it's time for an application and OS update.  So I will either be buying Vista and another copy of Office, or maybe I'll avoid the activation issues and pick up some open source .... if I'm going to be annoyed by bugs, they might as well be free.

Again, nothing personal, your previously supplied workaround advice worked like a charm.

    Thanks again.

    Ron.

I too am getting this error, it would tell me to activate my product, but the wizard tells me it is already activated.

I have the original discs and product keys: both say genuine microsoft complete with holograms.  The computer has been gutted rebuilt and hard drives replaced, nonetheless, it has (and is) only installed on one computer.  It is the hours of hassle, that this activation/re-activation business has caused that has resulted in me moving the rest of the computers in my office to "Open Office".  Anyway, this is the file:

  • Stephen,

I did read the whole thread including the response to JdK.  I also had tried the solutions that were suggested.  The data file referenced to delete to reset the activation wizard did not exist - infact, the folder it referenced in documents and settings also did not exist.  The program shows it is already activated. However, the Office validator still brings up an error.

  • Hello Deryni,

Microsoft Office XP Professional and Microsoft Publisher 2002 are not activated. You will need to re-active them to resolve your problem. Please select the “Activate by using the telephone” option. To activate the product this way, follow these steps:

    1) Start any Office program in XP Professionl.
    2) In the “Office Activation Wizard”, click the “Activate by using the telephone” option, and then click Next
    3) Read the “Microsoft Office Privacy Policy” page, and then click “Next”.

Also repeat the steps above for MS Publisher  2002. Please reference the following KB Article should you have any problems http://support.microsoft.com/kb/903275/en-us.  Here you will find links for various resolutions which you may encounter.  Also reference the following site for various telephone activation centers:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326851 Please re-post here should you need further assistance. Thank you and have a great day!

  • Stephen,

As I mentioned, cannot get the wizard to run for the REST of officeXP as it says in each component that it is already activated.  As far as Publisher, I ran activation wizard, and it activated without difficulty, but when (after rebooting) I ran the OGA, it once again tells me it will not validate because neither officeXP nor publisher are activated. Both Programs now do not bring up the wizard.  The file mentioned in the support articles data.dat are not able to be found, nor the folders they should be in.  I do have show hidden files. This is the new code, since activating publisher.

  • Deryni,

It appears all you need is to reactivate Office.  Below I will provide you with information to telephone activate.

Please select the “Activate by using the telephone” option. To activate the product this way, follow these steps:

Please reference the following KB Article should you have any problems http://support.microsoft.com/kb/903275/en-us.  Here you will find links for various resolutions which you may encounter.  Also reference the following site for various telephone activation centers:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326851.  Please re-post here should you need further assistance. • Stephen, I do not quite understand what I am failing to make comprehensible.
It may well be that "all I need is to reactivate Office," but as I have said, "when I start any office program, and open the office activation wizard, the wizard does not open, but says that the product is already activated."  The MS-Publisher which was included on a separate disk did launch an activation wizard, which activated normally and now ALSO responds "The product is a already activated" and will not open an activation wizard.
Pray tell, HOW do I open an activation wizard when it tells me it is already activated.  I DID find in one of  the support documents that I might have a corrupt data.dat file.   Ok... but data.dat does not exist on my machine, nor the folder were they say it should be.
The MS-Publisher activation appeared to have activated normally, but when I subsequently ran the OGA, it still gave me the error and continues to state MS-Publisher has not been activated.

So, how do I activate a product that says it is already activated??

  • Respectfully, Stephen, explain to me why this falls outside the scope of this forum?

The product "activated" in the normal fashion. It operates "normally".  It states that it is activated.  It is not shutting down because I have not "activated" my program. However, "Office 'Genuine Advantage' " does not detect it as being activated! Seems to ME it is a problem with OGA, and therefore it IS within the scope of this forum.

Hopefully I have been able to clairfy more?

    thank you

Dear Stephen, I do infact understand the difference between Activation and Validation. Perhaps it is OGA that does not!

My product activated normally, it functions normally, it does not validate properly. As you have noted, OAG does not seem to be able to TELL that My product has been activated, [and yes, I am certain that the product itself is genuine - I have the original discs and the packaging complete with holograms and hologram discs, etc.],

Once the product has been successfully activated, the activation wizard does not run again when clicked, it simply tells you that the product is already activated. It seems odd to me, that Office recognizes that it has been activated, but the OAG does not.  I was hoping it was a matter of a flag being reset or something similar the needed to be "registered" to either a) allow OAG to verify that the product was activated, or b) to allow a reset of the activation flag to permit the reactivation and perhaps allow OAG to validate.

  • I have the same problem as Deryni.  Seems the only way to get help is by paying Tech support.  But I'm not convinced they could handle it either.

When I tried to activate by phone, I was asked if the activation wizzard was running and if it isn't you are told to call back (no 2nd chnace, you just hang up on us!).  of course, the wizzard doesn't run if the product is already activated.  so after MS hung up on me, I called back and said the wizzard was running, but then I couldn't get past the first set of digits in the product ID.  I finally got an option to speak to someone.  they told me I had a "genuine" problem and transferred me to the "genuine" support (after dropping the call).  The "genuine" support said I had to talk to customer svc, and transferred me.  He asked me a couple questions and transferred me to activation support....back to square 1.  so I called customer service back and was asked for the product ID (did this already during one of the conversations before beng transferred, so I don't know what this solves.).  then I was told I can either pay you $49 for help or try the (this) website.  after saying that was crazy, because there is nothing on this website (that I can find) that says how to revalidate/reactivate a product.  she suggested the "genuine" support folks (her records don't show any of my calls this evening); I told her I already spoke with them and when we compared phone #s she said I should try the # she had.  She transferred me to a number that is no longer in service. So, I tried my # again (I've now been transferred everywhere for over an hour so what's another phone call?).  I was told I'd need tech support and would be transferred to customer svc .... but I've already been there and I'm not paying $49.  any suggestions?  I was told the product ID is valid. I've tried running the "fix errors" on Office (in the Add/Remove SW) ... would uninstalling and reinstalling run the actvation wizzard and perhaps fix it?

would be nice if Tech Support offered a solution...free.

btw, the survey that you ask us to complete after we get the "failure" on the genuine test implies that the reason it failed is because it isn't genuine.  ..."were you surprised it failed?"  "did you know you didn't have a genuine product?"  you know what they say about assuming.

I had the same problem and after much searching found the suggestion below and it works!! You have to delete the data file for Office, which forces/allows the product to run thru the activation wizard.  It's very simple.  Too bad the Genuine and Activation telephone support don't have this in their tool box.  I spent over an hour getting transferred around, until I was told the product is no longer covered by free support.  w/e

    -----------------------

  • Thanks, LBR, I did not have the file you mentioned, and a search for it did not turn up the file.  I do appreciate your assistance though.  As I noted, I did find that Publisher was not activated, I activated it, and it went through activation normally, and without difficulty. Of Course, when I re-ran Office Genuine Advantage (OGA), it once again failed to detect that My product was activated. I fail to see how this can be an "activation" issue, when everything EXCEPT OAG, can tell it is activated. As far as "validation" I am pretty much to the point of ignoring this entirely, and in so doing ignoring any other attempts to "Upgrade" my office/Windows programs where a "genuine 'advantage' " is involved. OAG - in my opinion - has a serious flaw in its ability to acertain whether some Office products have been activated. It is *NOT* an activation issue, as the products are functioning as normal fully activated products.

And YES Stephen, I had already been to EACH of those sites, and had already pursued the 'fixes' that had been suggested.  I realize I can go through the hassle of a complete re-install, (how many times did Windows 95/98/xp need to have that done to fix problems?) but I still think that is not a reasonable solution.  There is *NO*  question in My mind that this is a flaw in OAG.  And I think that trying to pawn it off as an 'activation' issue is. - disinGENUINE. It seems by LBR's experience with Phone support, that it is being done at the phone support level as well.

    Thank you,

  • Hello momo62,

It appears the issue with your validation is your copy of Office is not activated, please follow the steps below to activate your Office Suite:

    1)      Start any Office program.

    2)      In the “Office Activation Wizard”, click the “Activate by using the telephone” option, and then click Next

    3)      Read the “Microsoft Office Privacy Policy” page, and then click “Next”.
In the “Select your location” list, select a country or region. Call the telephone number that is listed on line 2. The customer service agent will ask you for the installation ID and will give you a confirmation ID in return. Type the confirmation ID in the boxes provided.

    4)      Click “Next”.

    5)      On the “Activation Complete” page, click “Finish”.

Here are various websites which will explain Activation as well as provide you with troubleshooting processes should you experience any and/or further complications:
