  • It appears you changed the product key to a retail one and that is why your subsequent MGA report indicates a genuine Windows license.

  • It is worth noting however that the Product Key in the second report looks to me like it may be of the MSDN type.

@Mr Porkchop: From where did you acquire this 'Retail' Key?

  • Your Windows 7 Home Premium OEM SLP license can only be used on the original PC it shipped with. You cannot use it on a different PC. You will need to purchase a new Windows license for your new PC.

  • I bought the program separately when I built the computer up.   Bought it specifically for this computer.  Worked flawlessly for 12 months and then broke on me.  Now it is funny, I have had this issue for about 3 days now and after many attempts to  repair the problem by installing my key  the program finally has given up being hateful and has give me the Genuine sticker.  YAY.  Who knows what happened

At least now it is fixed without shellin out another wad of cash.

After running the report again it looks pretty good...

  • The retail key was bought when I built the computer.  I   purchased from a legitimate seller and I have the original disk.  I think I know how I messed up the licensing on this computer.  I will list it down below.

I have a Dell computer that had Vista on it. I wanted to change the OS to Windows 7.  So I bought a Windows 7 key from a company called Kinguin over the internet.  That was my first mistake.  The company only gave me a key number  (the one on the first mga report )  and told me I had to download the Windows program from some website.  Well,  the website didn't work  and I decided to use the existing windows disk I already and install windows 7 to the dell and use the key code that Kingquin had sold me on  it( that was my second mistake) .    That worked sort of,  the program made me call a phone number and then licensed the Dell computer to the new keycode .    So,  somehow thru the magic of software protection that OEM SLP license  from the first mga report was transfered to my Homemade computer,  thus making it illegal.  So,  Now the computer is back to normal.  I have to deal with the Dell  Though and either buy a retail package of windows 7 for it  or go back to vista and save the money.

I hope this story makes some kind of sense.

  • It seems that this copy of windows 7 went bad again after a week of being rated genuine .  Hmmmm below is the data. Any insights would be interesting and helpful.  I have already ordered a brand new disk  and key from the same seller i bought this one from  8 months ago.

  • It appears the seller is  selling counterfeit product keys.  You need to purchase only from a proven, reputable seller such as Newegg.com.

  • The seller I bought this Windows OS from is  Microsoft Partner  (at least on his store page it states so) .  How can I prove that this is so.  Is there a registry of some kind where I can look it up?  I just bought another windows 7  from him today to fix this one.

Unfortunately, there are no sanity checks on the status of an MS Partner - heck, they even let me in! ;)

A lot of the scammers 'advertise' themselves as being MS Partners, and some may even be so - there have been a number reported over the years, and although the businesses have been shut down by MS, their status as Partners continues (for some strange reason!)

  • Unfortunately, eBay has become a prime venue for dishonest people peddling counterfeit/pirated/non-genuine software.

  • I estimate that something like 80-90% of Windows software sales on eBay are counterfeit - and similar levels for most other similar sites (Craigslist, Amazon MarketPlace [Amazon itself is OK], etc.)

ONLY purchase Windows from well-known reliable sites! (Newegg and BestBuy are probably the two best-known in the US)
