Question

I purchased a copy of XP online and now have to replace my hard drive. I can't find my product key for the re-install. Is there somewhere I can locate it on my existing hard drive before I install the new one?

Okay, so I purchased my computer like in 2001 and I had kazaa withouth anything to protect it from viruses. Point is I got a virus called the blaster or something which deleted almost all of the files i had saved onto this computer. My friend offered to fix it and I think he added a version of Windows XP Professional when I only used to have Windows XP. Now when I try to update to the windows service pack 2 it doesn't allow me to because the product keys are different. I already went to steps I could take and tried to update the product key but when I my computers original product key it says it's invalid. I dont have the other product key because my friend is the one who installed it into my comp. withouth me knowing....is there anything I can do?

It appears you have a product key for Windows XP Home Edition and not Windows XP Profesional, thus you cannot simply change the product key. If indeed you have Windows XP Home Edition, you would need to backup your important files and perform a "clean install" using your genuine Windows XP Home Edition CD and genuine Windows XP Home Edition product key.

A "Blocked VLK" is a Volume License Key that is valid, but was licensed solely to a corporation or larger enterprise/business. Blocked VLK's are Product Keys that Microsoft has received consent from the original owner to block usage of. A VL Product Key is non-transferrable to individuals. In order to resolve your non-genuine licensing issue, please visit: www.microsoft.com/genuine and click on "Validate Windows". When validation fails, you'll see a button to click on which will provide information on how to acquire a WGA Kit.

Carolsundet,
What make and model of computer?
Please look on the computer's case for a Certificate of Authenticity label, about 1" x 2.5". It will have the Product Key printed on it.

Hi,
I bought an ASUS laptop this time last year and it had Windows XP Home Edition on it, then in about september i sent it away to be fixed under warrenty. When it came back it had windows xp Profession edition on it. My computer has a lot of viruses and internal errors to the point where i can't do anything any more becuase the internal memory could not be read, so i decided to wipe the hard drive and reformat it with my windows xp home edition cd i have. When i tried to do this i was told my product key on my laptop was invalid and also the product key that came with the windows xp home cd that i am using is invalid too.

SerialChick,
Please look on the bottom of your laptop for a Certificate of Authenticity label, about 1" x 2.5". It will have the Product Key printed on it.
Don't post the key, just tell us if your computer has a CoA.
If so, what version and edition of Windows is listed on the CoA?
Also, what does your XP Home CD look like? Have a look at this web page http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/

If your system still runs you can use special software to recover your Windows key. Most of them support some versions of Windows and some other Microsoft products. Also there is a products like "Recover Keys" ( http://recover-keys.com/ ) that support all Windows versions and 300+ of other major software packages.
