I take it that You're asking if you can use Ultimate media to install
Professional, or Professional media to install Ultimate?
Yes - make sure that you enter the key at the prompt, otherwise it will
install a default version of whatever it's supposed to be for, with a
temporary (blocked) key valid for 30 days.

  • Note: A Windows 7 Ultimate Key will not work in a Windows 7 Pro install, however.

  • The customer's question is a little confusing.  He could be asking:

    a) Can he use Windows 7 Pro DISK to install Windows 7 Ultimate

    or

    b) Can he use a Windows 7 Ultimate KEY in an installed copy of Windows 7 Pro.

Your post is correct for a)

My post is correct for b)

    Thank you,

If the  installed OS is Pro - he can use an Anytime Upgrade to get it to Ultimate with a valid Key
