The way which works for me is to use a unicode-compliant tab delimited txt file (it is another option on the Save As... list for Excel). You will need to adjust the delimiting settings in the Wizard but it will work without a problem. I have used this to import data in Chinese, Japanese and Korean into CRM without problems.

I found this article which explains how to save the file in Unicode:
The trick to getting around this problem is to save the CSV file in Unicode (32-bit, Universal character set) format before you import it with CRM’s Import Data Wizard.
- From Excel, choose Save As then save the file as CSV.
- Open the CSV file in notepad then do a “Save As”
- In the Save As dialogue, you will see a picklist labelled “Encoding” that defaults to ANSI (8-bit)
- Change the Encoding to Unicode, change Save as type to “All Files” then click Save

Did you install the language pack (MUI) for CRM?

No, I didn't install it. I don't plan to use the French language, just some of the names have those chars.
And, as I mentioned, test env had the same settings (only English), but imported records displayed properly. Do I still need to install it, and why? Thank you

So does the dev system have the problem system have the correct fonts installed?

Hi Jamie,
Thank you for helping. Did I mention this is 2011 Online? All languages are already available for me to enable. Test env was Online as well. all records were imported via Import Wizard in both cases.
My only solution so far is to copy the right char and paste it for each record with problems. thank you

If you can paste in the correct character and it works, it does not sound like a display issue but rather a data import issue. Did you use CSV files to transfer the data from test to production as these are not unicode compliant and would potentially cause problems for accented charaters.
