System was Vista with XP downgrade rights RRS feed

  • Question

  • System was Vista with XP downgrade rights.  After the latest WGA notification update, the system came back as non genuine.

So how do we remedy this?  The system now comes back as a blocked PID.  What are our options now?

  • Hello Susan,

Thank you for visiting us today. Please search the Internet for
74KG7-BQB9G-W47KG. These are the last 15 digits of product key presented by the WGA results. There are roughly 106 hits from various sites.  It appears this product key is a Geographically Blocked VLK. Geographically blocked keys are blocked when it is detected in use outside of the worldwide geographic area(s) covered by its VL Agreement. Also did you notice that Office Professional Edition 2003 was installed with a now blocked VLK? The will block the customer from using Office 2007 which appears to be Genuine.

Susan I would work with whoever worked with you on the Vista to XP downgrade rights so the product key can get figured out. As it appears now based on the MGA results Windows XP was installed with a now GEO blocked VLK.

    Take care,

    Stephen

  • Hi Susan,

Thank you for providing this information as I wasn't for sure where you may have been located. Curious where did you procure the product key? Is there any possibility the key came from outside the USA? If so this would explain the actual GEO Blocked pk then.

    Stephen

  • I have no idea where they got the key.  I'm actually asking on behalf of a MS partner who has a client with Vista business downgraded to XP and trying to help him (and his client) out of a situation where the machine is now a lovely shade of black.

As far as I know he's located in the USA and so is the client.  I think they got the key from the system builder.  I'll check with the partner and report back.  They definitely have a legal Vista and a legal right to XP downgrade but somehow got a bad key on the system.

  • Sounds good Susan. Also have them take a look @ the Office Professional 2003 key as it is reporting as a blocked VLK. This key belongs to a major corporation. They need to uninstall Office 2003 immediatly. A quick FYI Research has shown that about half of the software copies available on P2P download sites are infected with root kits, spyware, Trojans, and other potentially harmful malware. One file in particular was very alarming.  This file was an administrator account giving the attacker full control over both your system and data.  I would be very concerned about your system integrity because Windows is non-genuine. If they are unsure where both the bits and key came from then I would recommend them to reformat the hard drive immediately as well because they could be in a compromising situation.

Take care Susan and hopefully I have been of some assistance.

  • Hello Susan,

Yeah, looks like another case of "WGA nightmares."  http://www.windowssecrets.com/2009/05/21/02-Get-all-security-patches-without-WGA-nightmares

The real nightmare would be if this box had its Windows and Office installed from downloaded ISOs.  I'll bet those ISOs have rootkits and viruses that the security companies haven't yet dreamed up (invariaby stupid) names for.

  • The sad part about this was that this partner got kicked around quite a bit in the partner channel and didn't get the advice to run the WGA tool and to use the rekey tool to flip it to the proper XP key.

This is more of a case of possibly one of his vendors or suppliers using a bad key and then the Partner did not get good advice from the support channels he called.

  • You know I need to comment on one thing here.

The FAIL that occur was not that this Partner got nailed by WGA.  The FAIL was that no one in the Partner support that he contacted was able to help him.

He didn't install a bittorrent copy.  He had a legal right to this system.

  • Hello Susan,

Well there are bad car mechanics, bad lawyers, bad heart surgeons, and bad computer technicians and consultants.  Sounds like the bad computer people the business owner engaged need to be sent packing and better ones found.

A lot of what we see here at the WGA forum is the fallout and collateral damage from incompetent and/or dishonest technicians.
