Not receiving "Alerts"?

Question
-
I have "Altert Me" checked but I rarely get an alter Email. I get one once every 3 weeks or so, if I'm lucky. At first I thought it was due to no responses, but when I goto this web site and login and do a "My Threads" I see I have responses.
Does "Alert Me" mean it will send an Email to me when a new post to my thread has been added/updated?
If so, why the heck isn't this working?
Thanks, Rob.

Yup, we may have found the culprit... We had the Live Alerts team fix the 2 of you as an experiment, and it seems it worked... We're now workign with them to figure out how to fix the data on a wider scale.

Alerts are not working for me either. I have checked my profile to ensure everything is set as expected, I am subscribed to MSDN forums for Alerts but I have not received any Alerts since the migration to the new Web site.
I like to keep up with the responses I have provide when someone asks another question, but it is very challenging to find the time to walk through all My Threads to see if someone left another message.
Please help with the Alert issue. It is virtually impossible to be responsive to questions in the absence of getting an Alert when the question is updated.
Other than that, I think the new features are great, keep up the good work!!
Best Regards, Donna -
Threads subscribed to prior to the migration were not carried over. So any alerts in the old forums.microsoft.com system will need to be re subscribed to. In addition, there were some issues in live alerts in Oct/Nov 08, if people are not able to get alerts, can you try unsubcribing and resubscribing? And reply to this thread letting me know if that had any impact on the alerts delivery?
Thanks!

Hi,
I am not sure the steps you want me to take to unsubscribe and subscribe but here is what I did:
- Selected the Profile link
- Selected My Application Settings
- Unchecked the "Enable Live Alerts by Default"
- Selected "Save Settings"
- Checked "Enable Live Alerts by Default"
- Selected "Save Settings"
- I then went to My Alerts
- Selected the link "Change Microsoft Alerts Delivery Settings"
- Which takes me to the following URL
- http://alerts.live.com/Alerts/MyAlerts.aspx
- I selected unsubscribe to MSDN Microsoft Forums which resulted in the following information delivered in a pop-up box
- To go to the Microsoft Forums Web site where you can cancel your current alerts, click OK.
If you want to continue receiving alerts from Microsoft Forums, click Cancel. - When I selected Ok, I was routed to the following site
- The above site does not have CRM forums
Please let me know if I should take some other action as I still don't appear to be receiving alerts.
Best Regards, Donna -
Hi Donna,
It seems that you've unsubscribed from the old MSDN Microsoft Forums alert.
The new Forums should have the following heading in your alerts page:
MSDN Forums (http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/forums)
TechNet Forums (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/forums)
Microsoft Community Forums (http://social.microsoft.com/forums)
Microsoft Answers (http://social.answers.microsoft.com/forums)
Microsoft Expression Forums (http://social.expression.microsoft.com/forums)
It sounds to me that you're not getting subscribed to alerts. Do you see any threads at all if you click on "My Threads" page?
Thanks.

Hi,
When I am in this forum and check My Threads, I see the list of Threads that I subscribed to. When I go to my Live Account at the following link, I do not find a way to add the list of Alerts you referenced.
http://alerts.live.com/Alerts/MyAlerts.aspx?wa=wsignin1.0
The only forum related alert available to me is MSDN Alerts from the "Add Alert" link and that I believe is the Alert for the 'Old' MSDN site. All the other Alerts available to add are things like msnbc.com, fox sports, msn video, Amber Alerts, newsweek, etc. I do not see a list of Forum related alerts except the old MSDN site alert.
I must be looking in the wrong place. Where do I find the other forum alerts to Add to My Alerts. Thank you for your help to get the Alerts added.
Thank you!
Best Regards, Donna -
Thanks Donna.
You're in the right place for the alerts settings. When you subscribe to alerts in the Forums App (3.0), you automatically get subscribed to the correct brand of Forums. In this case, you're not automatically getting subscribed. Something else is going on. I'll investigate this with my/our team.
In the meantime, for troubleshooting purposes, is it possible for you to create a test Live or Hotmail account, create a new profile in Forums, subscribe to threads and see if you get the alerts? I'm wondering if the issue relates to your profile.
Fyi... I did get an alert after you replied back to my post.
Thanks.

Hi Don,
I am replying using a different Hotmail Account to see if I receive the Alert for this update. I will post another response directly after this one. This is an existing hotmail account that I have so if this does not work, will create a new hotmail account and try the same test.
Thank you! -
Signed in with my original account to see if the Test Profile hotmail account receives the Alert that a post was added. I will also check the Test Account Profile to see if subscribtions were added for the forum.
Thank you for your continued assistance to resolve the issue, I appreciate it!
Best Regards, Donna -
Ok, I received the alert to the Test Hotmail Profile so it appears that there is an issue associated with My Profile. Will it be possible to fix My Profile. Maybe there is something broken in the relationship between My Profile for this forum and My Live Account?
-
-
Hi Rob,
This is Donna (Forum user not a MS Staff member).
The Alert issue appears to be associated with specific Profiles. I created a new Profile and the Alerts work for that Profile. I used a different Live Account for the New Profile and the new Live Account updated with the Forum Alert as expected.
Alerts do not appear to work with my 'migrated' profile or rather, the Profile that existed when the Web site was migrated. There appears to be a disconnect between my migrated profile and my Windows Live Account. My Windows Live account does not appear to get updated with my Forum Profile Alerts. -
Thanks Donna for confirming with a new hotmail account (new profile as well). Donna, let me try dig around and see if there's a discrepency with your migrated profile from 2.x to 3.x. I'll get back with you once I get further info.
Thanks for your patience.

Creating a new profile is not a option for me. Does anyone know if Microsoft plan to fix this since they are the source of the problem?
If anyone at Microsoft want to look at my profile, feel free robains@msn.com.

While you're poking around... rlrcstr (at) msn (dot) com
I'm not getting alerts since the migration, either...
Tried unsubscribing and resubscribing and all that...
Please let me know when the fix is in.
Thanks.

Here's a quick update to the thread. We are working with the Live Alerts team in investigating this issue. We have worked with Rob and Donna and gotten the Live Alerts team some specific data points to assist in their investigation. As soon as we hear back from the Live Alerts team, we'll let you all know

May I add my name onto the list of not receiving any email alerts? I do not come here often so I know nothing about migrations, but I have not received any alerts on posts I have done even the past couple of days, including one done 10pEST on 20080312.
Thank you.

Everyone,
Just to let you all know, the Live Alerts system is experiencing an outage. Some alerts are getting through, but they haven't yet resolved everything. I'll update once they give us the all clear. This doesn't mean that they have a resolution for our issue yet. I've asked them for an update on our issue and will let you all know.
Thanks
Mike. -

Hi everyone,
As you can see we have just released the latest of Forums. This includes a fix for the failure in alerts. All you need to do is subscribe to alerts for a thread and you should start receiving alerts. If you still see problems with alerts, please let us know!
Thanks!

I also was having problem with receiving the alerts, so hopefully it is fixed for me. I have a related question regarding how alerts work. My windows live account is an internet email address but I have an alternate work email address setup in my profile also. Will the alert go out to both of my addresses? Or just the email I used to set up my Windows Live account?
-
-
I was hoping that this would be the case for my alternate address, but alerts only appear to be going to my primary one. It would be cool if this was an explicit option to choose. I am unable to access my email account where the alerts are being sent while at work, so I was hoping it would work this way.

Problem has returned for me, well it's 50/50 whether or not I get notification. I've pretty much given up on this, just don't have the time for yet another feature that doesn't work with Microsoft's products and services. But I can't wait for Google's OS. And more importantly to our US economy, Google has NOT asked the US government to increase the H1B visa cap from 65,000 like Microsoft did.

Hi,
I'm getting the same problem. I'm not receiving alert mails in my hotmail inbox. For example I have registered for
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sharepointdevelopment/thread/6ffcd634-68ec-4b46-81f8-5d7c9b5d0152
but I have not any response while the third response from Ginni Sharma was posted.
Thanks,

Hi Matt,
I've followed the thread for months and my alerts haven't been fixed yet.
I wonder if you can help. I had gone through live.com support at one point in May/June to try to resolve this to no avail. At the time they had me go to my Live alerts page and DELETE all of my forum alerts thinking that it would be easy to re-add them. Since then I never heard back even after repeatedly contacting them. The case ID in case it is relevant is Case ID SRX1101531498ID.
My problems are similar to Donna in that the alerts website for me doesn't show anything but fox news etc. as options to get alerted on.
My liveID email address is jkuntz at cogeco dot ca
Thx

Hi Don,
Yes the problem still exists.
The primary problem is - in going through support channels in troubleshooting this original - the support engineer asked me to delete my subscription to the alerts service thinking it would automatically resubscribe me when I went back. It never gives me the option to resubscribe.
It's frustrating and makes these forums all but useless for me as constantly checking for responses to posts it not a productive use of our time! -

1) Me too! I've not received a MS Forums Alert for exactly a year now!The latest MS alert was in Sep 2009, and that was probably before the migration to this new Forums.2) What's interesting is that the traffic in this thread stopped about 8 months ago, and I wonder whether it is because the issue has been resolved by MS and most users are happy now, or people have simply given up and considered the issue to be a hopeless one!3) As many of you have already stated, without the email alerts these forums are almost useless for both posters and responders. It is absolutely wasting of time and frustrating to check for responses and follow-ups in a timely fashion.4) Fixing the problem for a couple of users, as MS had apparently done, is by no means convincing. Even for those "lucky" ones, if I recall correctly, they reported back: " ...receiving MS Alerts is now a 50/50 chance depending on the weather", or something to that effect.5) Can someone please advise on what exactly the current status of the MS Alert Notifications is ??Is MS still investigating the problem and considers it to be a priority ??Your comments would be greatly appreciated.Monir
