Need help setting up my WHS to connect to my XBox 360

Question
-
I am trying to share media from my WHS to my XB360 but it just won't connect.
I can see the server from my 360 but when I try to connect it says "cannot connect to this computer , make sure to enable this device on your computer before trying to connect" Now i did this for my Windows 7 PC and it works perfectly but I have no idea how to enable the 360 on my WHS.
Please , any help would be greatly appreciated.

Lorax you're post made me rethink this problem and on a search I go an interesting idea , I just tried something I had not tried before and (fingers crossed) it seems to be working now!!!!
i need to test some more and if it works I will type out what I did
be back in a bit
oK IT WORKS!!this is what I did:
I was just about to force the install of WMP11 by some instructions I found in a search , as I read through the instructions I noticed something that made me think about another problem I once had with a windows service that I resolved by stopping the service and restarting it.
So ,
go to you're WHS desktop either direct OR through Remote desktop sharing from one of you're PC's
click Start , right click My Computer and select Manage
go to the services and applications section on the left and select services from the list
in the right window find "Windows Media Connect service" , right click on it , and select stop (note it may complain because its in use at this time but it Will stop)
go to you're WHS console and shut off media sharing by deslecting the 3 media folders
go turn on you're 360
come back and restart you're WHS
wait for it to start and go to you're 360 again and try to access the media folders , the error about connecting should now be gone BUT it should say "no media found" for each video Music and Photos
log back onto you're WHS desktop , it may give an error about media sharing could not start (BUT it is in fact started) and it will ask you to send an error report to MS
start up you're WHS console and enable media sharing , select the folders and then go to one of your Computers and go to your shares and sift through some of the music , video and photos you have in these folders by opening some of the media.
THEN go back to the 360 and try to access some media , it took a bit for all my folders to be seen but after a few tries i can now access all my media on my WHS through the 360!!
I restarted my 360 several times and it still sees it so....fingers crossed!!
PS: forgive some spelling errors , this kinda got me excited lol!!PPS: not sure if just shutting down and restarting the service alone will work or not , but appearently there is a problem with the service and it must be restarted to fix it , simple reboots or restarts do NOT solve the problem though.

Did you enable Media Sharing in the server Console for the shares you want to share, then reboot the server?

Yes I did , I have all three checked.
I can see the Server on my XBox , it refreshes WHS with my other PC's in my computer list , but on each PC I had to enable the XB360 to allow access to the folders and now it wants me to do it with the Server , I have no idea how to do that with the WHS?
thanks for any help.

You shouldn't have to do this, but you can try enabling the Guest account on your server and give that account read-only access to the Music share.Monday, November 30, 2009 2:47 AMModerator -
I'll try and see

ok I have the guest account enabled , it will NOT let me set it up or allow remote access with the Guest account , the 360 still says the console is not enabled on the computer , all my other computers connect because they have media connection software that allows me to see that the XBox is on line and allow it.
my old XBox 360 connected to this same server but this new one has a new console software and the features seem different , they are VERY Vista and windows 7 friendly but not XP or server , this really should not be this difficult.

yeah and good luck trying to get help with it too.
I have tried every way I know of to connect , the XBox sees the server as a viable computer but says to get on the server and allow the xbox , there is NO WAY to do this , and to the statement "just turn on media sharing" ....its been on the whole time and I have turned it off and on several times...it does NOT work.
If they would just make a patch for the media player on the WHS to add the media sharing option to it it would work , but I guess it just can't be done. I have tried to update media player but it will not update so...
my server is useless as a media sharing center for my 360 , sad I know but thats the way it is till someone at MS does something about it , till then all my videos and pictures are on my Windows 7 PC.
Lorax184 , if you find a solution please share it and I will do the same.

I am having some of the same issues. I recently upgraded my WHS to Version 3.0 because I was under the impression that the new version allowed you to connect the Xbox 360 to the WHS media files via Windows Media Center on the 360. Is this not the case?
Every time I choose Windows Media Center on the 360, it gives me a setup code, I click Continue, and then it asks me to visit xbox.com/pcsetup to configure the PC software. I have media sharing and Windows Media Center sharing turned on on the WHS with Full guest access. What am I missing here?

First of all, there is no media center on the WHS. To play the media on the xbox 360, you need to use the sharing options found in the whs console, settings, Media Sharing. Then use the video/music/picture library to find the server. To use the media center, you'll need a pc with the media center and install the media center connector on that pc, then set up the xbox media center to connect to the pc, not the server.
You should not need to activate the guest account to use the media sharing, however in many situations you will need to be signed in to xbox live on the xbox before you can start the media.

I knew I liked Jim Beam Black for a reason, your solution worked great for me. I had just gotten my xbox back from 3 red rings of death repair, and it would no longer connect to my WHS shares. I tried everything I could find on the internet, and your solution was the answer.Saturday, August 21, 2010 1:11 PM

Thanks JimBeamBlack everything worked out. I got a new Xbox360 SLIM and couldn't get my WHS to share media with my xbox.
