Really non-genuine? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I purchased my laptop (ACER) 2nd hand from a co-worker about 3 years ago. I have allowed the computer to download what it likes from Microsoft, and have never had any problems, including when it downloaded Microsoft Genuine Advantage. In fact, I have three times had MGA tell me that my computer passed validation.

Last night I ran a registry cleaner, and now suddenly my Windows no longer passes validation.

The guy I bought it from told me at the time that the computer had it's hard drive replaced under warranty, so maybe it got an invalid version then.

The only disks I got with the computer are the OEM system disks, and there is a COA sticker on the bottom of the machine with ACER on it in black.

My question is, why did MGA tell me my copy was fine if it's not, or did cleaning the registry remove something that invalidated Windows.

The computer is getting a bit old, and I'm looking at replacing it within the next couple of months, so I am disinclined to add $240 (half what I paid for the laptop in the first place) to Bill Gates' coffers, and since I don't have "high quality counterfeits" to send you, I can't get complimentary Genuine.

Any advice you can offer would be appreciated.

I've run the diagnostic, and the copy follows

  • Hello MJenko,

You have whats known as a VLK or volume license key which is reserved for businesses, schools, governments etc and are not sold/given to the general public.  New keys are blocked all the time by the request of the legal owner of the product key for reasons such as the key was lost/stolen etc, so this is why it could work for a period of time and then now show as being invalid.  Your best option right now would be to backup any important data and use the recovery CDs for your system to install the genuine copy of Windows which was assigned to this system, I also noticed the product key for your Office Suite and Publisher are also VLKs which have now been blocked.  Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

  • I bought my laptop new with the original OEM Office 2003 software (Sealed in it'soriginal pacaging).  I Loaded the office software myself, thus I'm sure it is not loaded on any other computers.  It's strange that windows din't validate this software.  I wonder how windows decide which software is valid for my computer has never been formatted or the office software re-loaded on this computer or any other computers.
