New Install on OEM validated, but then 3 days later says "not genuine" been through Windows help, does same thing over after re-install. RRS feed

  • I built my second machine from scratch, all new items.

    Installed Windows Home Premium.

    Validation went fine first time. Then, after a week, says "Windows not activated, you have 27 days to activate". I ignore this, thinking it's an error.

    Home screen ultimately goes dark. I try and go through product activation again, getting error code. I call tech support. Their solution is to reinstall. It doesn't work (this, after 4 hours).

    I then call tech support a week later. Their solution is to re-install. Still won't activate. They confirm my product key is good (duh, bought it from them), but still can't get software to activate. They take control of my machine, wipe out (without asking) my boot hard drive, then re-install. Still won't activate. Finally, they mess around with registry, and it works. All is well.

    But the very next day, I get another "Windows not activated, you have 29 days to activate". I try to do the online activation, getting dreaded error code, again 0x80070005.

    Today, I reinstall, again (with their new product key). It won't activate, again. 

    This seems to be a big problem. I don't really have the time to spend 4 hours on the phone every time to fix a problem they obviously have.

    A friend of mine had the same problem, and said to come here.

    Below is the diagnostic report.

    So what IS the REAL problem, and what is the PERMANENT fix?  By the way, it kicked off all my Office 2010 stuff, too, so my guess is there is some "check" code that isn't corresponding somewhere.

    This is very frustrating, and a real fix (not "try this", "try that") would be most appreciated.

  • Sorry about the delay - work keeps getting in the way of things :(

    The output there looks OK, so let's have a look at the file system.

    Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

     

    Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

    Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

    Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

     

    At the Command prompt, type

     

    CHKDSK C: /R

     

    and hit the Enter key.

    You will be told that the drive is locked,

    and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, press Enter, and then reboot.

     

    The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

     

    After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -

    then run the SFC.

     

    SFC -System File Checker - Instructions

    Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

    Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

    Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

     

    At the Command prompt, type

     

    SFC /SCANNOW

     

    and hit the Enter key

     

    Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

     

     

    Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and upload it to your SkyDrive Public folder (http://skydrive.live.com ) and post a link to it so that I can take a look.

     

    Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.

  • (You already have the WAT update installed - so I have no idea what Carey thinks attempting to install it will do)

    Permission Denied errors can be tricky to troubleshoot - please start with this....

    Open Windows Explorer (Computer)

    Navigate to the C:\Windows folder

    Find the System32 sub-folder and right-click on it

    select Properties

     

    Clear the 'blob' from the 'Read-only (Only applies to files in folder)' box by clicking on it until it's plain white.

    Click on Apply.

     

    Make sure that the radio button for 'Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files' is set, and click OK.

     

    Accept the Administrator prompt. After a couple of seconds, you'll be told there is an error - click on the 'Ignore all' button.

     

    Wait for it to finish - it could take a couple of minutes.

     

    OK out, and exit Windows Explorer.

     

    Reboot twice

     

    Run another MGADiag report and post the results.

  • Carey, KB971033 is already installed on my system, to no avail. I did what Noel suggested, but still not working.

    Surely this must be a problem MS has run across. I mean, it is a brand new build.......

  • I've never seen an issue with MSE - apart from being unable to install it because the system won't validate.

    Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands

     

    sc sdshow plugplay

      Here are some instructions to make life easier :)

    1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt. 

    2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once. 

    3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

  • Hmmm...this must have the local experts stumped, too.

    Any thoughts?  Anyone?

    Spoke with Microsoft again, yesterday. After having the technician tell me there was nothing wrong, he quickly saw that there was. After re-doing everything (scanning, new product key, etc.), the machine still will not activate, and gives the error 0x80070005. 

    It would SEEM that there is something in the activation cycle that is causing the problem. I don't know how to read all of the diagnostic codes, and appreciate the help of those people who have taken a look.

  • Sorry about the delay - work keeps getting in the way of things :(

    The output there looks OK, so let's have a look at the file system.

    Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

     

    Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

    Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

    Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

     

    At the Command prompt, type

     

    CHKDSK C: /R

     

    and hit the Enter key.

    You will be told that the drive is locked,

    and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, press Enter, and then reboot.

     

    The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

     

    After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -

    then run the SFC.

     

    SFC -System File Checker - Instructions

    Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

    Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

    Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

     

    At the Command prompt, type

     

    SFC /SCANNOW

     

    and hit the Enter key

     

    Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

     

     

    Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and upload it to your SkyDrive Public folder (http://skydrive.live.com ) and post a link to it so that I can take a look.

     

    Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.
