At Wits End w/WHS 2011 Connector RRS feed

  • Question

  • Have a new WHS 2011 setup and configured.  After removing the WHS v1 connector, I started on my first client connector install and got "An unexpected error has occurred." after it validated configuration and prompted for password.   Seems like there have been a lot of connector issues, but with many potential solutions.  I tried disabling IPv6, uninstalling .NET v4 framework, putting server in the hosts file, the FindMyServer app, and probably more that I have forgotten.

The installer finds the server fine (entering a bad password fails).  The password only contains letters and numbers.  All important updates on the server have been applied.

Here is what the ClientDeploy.log file shows:

  • This describes my situation exactly.

I actually did get the Connector software installed, but can't remember what I did in between that I can't get it to install on other clients.

Someone else in another thread mentioned a possible problem from the other pooling add-ins, like StableBit Drive Pool. Are you using that or DriveBender or something?

  • Hi,

Im getting exactly the same error and have drivebender installed.

Can you remember what you did to get it working as im losing the plot with it?

    Thanks

  • I came back from holiday to find that none of the client PCs could connect to the server via the launchpad (but could see the shares etc.) so I tried uninstalling the connector software and reinstalling. I eventually found out the CMOS battery in the server had died (and the time kept resetting),so having replaced that and applied all updates to the WHS 2011, I tried installing the connector software again and keep on getting the same "unexpected error" as other on this thread.

My server has the correct ip address (ipv4), I can download the connector software normally and it can find the server, prompting me for the password. But the error always occurs.

I don't have DriveBender installed, whatever that is.

  • Are time zone, date and time correct on WHS?

  • Many thanks for those links.

Still no luck though so I'll have to do try a reinstall of WHS 2011.

  • Before you try a reinstall, do you have backup of WHS2011 itself? Preferably one from before the CMOS battery died.

  • I have set it to backup the server, but it writes to one of the disks in the server itself as opposed to an external drive.

Is it possible to restore from an internal server disk if I boot up using the WHS 2011 DVD?

  • This thread appears to indicate you can.  Why not give it a try?

  • Thanks for suggestion. I restore the server from the latest backup and it completed successfully.

I then proceeded to install the connector software again and although it did proceed further than it had done before, it got stuck at 95% (or so) installation complete and then finally gave up with an error message saying it'll undo all the changes.

I followed the many possible resolution for this case (disabled ipv6, disable firewalls on both client and server, start media centre related services), but not of them solved the problem.

I'm going to attempt a reinstall of the server, but I'm not hopeful that would work either and it may be an issue on the client side. To be honest, WHS is more pain than it's worth and the devs should be fired for such shoddy error handling with totally useless error messages.

If this final attempt fails, I'm going to cut my losses and move to a Ubuntu file server.

  • Take a look at WHS v1, that's what I use.

While the article is almost 1 year old, the following link gives a fair comparison of the two.

    http://www.wegotserved.com/2011/04/07/windows-home-server-windows-home-server-2011-worth-upgrading/

Some factors that convinced me to stay with v1.

    1.  Server data backup allows spanning of backup drives that is fairly easy to set up.  Once set up, the backup is started in the WHS console.  First backup takes a long time, but subsequent backups are incremental and run very quickly.

    2.  No 2TB limit to backups in v1.

    2.  Restore is much faster in v1 vs. 2011 for both individual files and full restore

    3.  Drive Extender in v1 makes managing the storage pool very easy.

    4.  No certificate issues in v1, the xxxxxx.homeserver.com domain is easily set up

    5.  There wasn't much offered in 2011 that I didn't already have in v1

    6.  v1 has a long, over four year, proven track record.

    7.  Abundant Add-Ins available for v1

Hopefully, v3 will combine the advantages of v1 and 2011 together and provide a much better customer experience.

I still run a WHS 2011 test box, but all my real data is entrusted to WHS v1.

v1 is increasingly becoming unavailable at many online sites.  I would bet money MS will not offer any additional copies for sale.  However, the following link gives a few sites that may have it available.  Some state "in store only, check for availability".

  • I'm was actually a WHS v1 user for a couple of years before I thought it was worth giving up DE for a more modern operating system and buying WHS 2011.

How wrong I was! I suppose I could reinstall v1 again.

Is Microsoft even serious about improving WHS 2011? It's such a sub-standard product, it's quite plain they haven't put much effort into it at all.
