Microsoft fixit tells me DVD drive cannot write RRS feed

  • Question

  • Ran Microsoft Fix it Center to test DVD writer. I have a DVD loaded. It correctly tells me the make of the device & then tells me
'The selected device is not capable of writing'.
Yet I've installed Nero Burning ROM 11.2.10300.0.0 & can write to DVD + and - RW. Why is the Fix it center giving me this message?
    I'm using windows XP SP3

I've now found that I get the same error message whether a DVD, CD or no disc at is loaded.

  • Extra information.  I had posted this on the general forum & got replies which didn't help me, but I'll post these replies now.

I've looked at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316529 & my registry looks right.   The drive type value is '2'.
I didn't follow the rest of the procedure because my registry seemed to be ok - so leave it alone!!

I've tried searching the hardware compatibility list & although I can't find my drive (Sony +-RW D56A), the drive was supplied with the Inspiron 6000 I bought from Dell & the Sony D56A spec says that it supports DVD +-RW.

I've looked at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321641/ & I've certainly tried all the steps listed in the “Let me fix it myself” section.

I've installed Window Media Player 11.  I've been able to use this to burn an audio CD.  Yet when I ran Fixit, it keeps telling me:
'The selected device is not capable of writing'.

This is clearly wrong.  I'm using Microsoft's software to successfully write CDs, yet the Fixit says that I can't.

Fixit either isn't working at all, or giving the wrong errors.
