Windows Update has stopped working in Vista. Fix?

Error code is 80070005. Says Windows can't search for new updates, that there has never been a check for updates and that updates have never been installed, but this is untrue as I've received regular updates until recently. Obviously ability to connect to server for updates has been lost. Has some part of Vista operating system become corrupted? What's the fix? Thanks.
