OCS as IM solution RRS feed

  • Question

  • In our company we have about 300 users. We all use Windows Live Messenger to communicate and we are all laptop users. We have been experiencing SPIM and viruses. It has been suggested to buy an IM appliance to help with it. I would like to give OCS a try due to the fact that we are MS Gold partners and because it might be a fit.

I am aware that OCS can do much more than being an IM solution, but for now our goals are:

    - Secure IM communications to prevent SPIM and viruses
    - Being able to handle a list of common address book for everyone
    - Being able to use the IM solution from anywhere without VPN
    - Replace Live messenger with a corporate solution
    - Communicate in a controlled managed way with customers and parners

Are these goals reachable with OCS?
How does federation work with Live Messenger on the other end?
How does OCS integrate with Exchange UM?
How does OCS integrate with CISCO VOIP technologies?

Thanks and please provide MS resources to learn more about OCS (white papers, webcasts, etc)

I think you will find OCS can do all this and more. In relation to the SPIM and Viruses you can also check out Forefront for OCS to give you an extra level of protection.

How does federation work with Live Messenger on the other end?
So federation with Live Messenger is part of PIC. Is there anything specific you need to know about it?

How does OCS integrate with Exchange UM?
Exchange UM is the best choice VM plaform for OCS Enterprise Voice users. Integration is very easy. Some night time reading can be found here - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb676499.aspx

How does OCS integrate with CISCO VOIP technologies?
You can do this a couple of different ways. Maybe the easiest is to do Direct SIP to your call manager. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/office/ocs/bb735838.aspx check this site out to see if your call manager version is listed. Worst case scenario you can always put a gateway in the middle.

  • Thanks Matt for your reply.

Regarding OCS with Federation, what is PIC? I don't know what specifics to ask, except that the end goal is communicate securely with 3rd parties that use Live Messenger. Can you explain how does Federation work in the case of OCS and Live Messenger in layman terms?

    Thanks

  • PIC is Public IM Connectivity. Kind of federation for Live/MSN, yahoo and AOL. So basically you would need to deploy and edge server and then you will be able to connect your OCS environment to Live. There are some different options you have around how people are allowed to connect to users in your organisation. the traffic from your edge server to the Live network is encrypted and if you deploy forefront you'll have that extra protection against viruses or you could also block file transfers and/or URLs if you have an outbreak from Live.

  • As you mentioned, you can also deploy an IM security solution which will address your primary concern around SpIM without requiring that you deploy a new server product and force all your users to use a different IM client.  A comprehensive security solution can also address a number of additional issues like social networking compliance, and adware, spyware and malware blocking.  As well, it can protect you today while you use MSN and in the future once you do deploy OCS.    Check out this demo for more information.  http://www.demosondemand.com/DemoStage3/index.asp?sessID=FACE002&promotion_id=2229&startTime=0
