Old Dell Desktop RRS feed

    Hello,

I'm working on an old dell desktop circa 2000 for anothe company as a favor.  It's coming up with the WGA not genuine message.

In reviewing the machine, it looks like the original key was a VLK key, and I know Dell had a problem back then not using the personal keys but instead using the VLK, so now it's saying it's not right.  There is no Windows XP key sticker on the machine because it's so old. Is there any way to fix it for these guys?

    Here's the diags:

  • BobComer,

You can enter the service tag in this web page http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/my_systems_info/details?c=us&l=en&s=gen   then click on the Original System Configuration tab to fin out what OS the computer shipped with from Dell.

If it shipped with W2KPro it should have a CoA on it.  CoAs for W98 and NT could be on the computer, or could be on the front cover of the (long since lost or thrown out) User Guide that came with the license.

To my knowledge Dell has never shipped computers with VLKs preinstalled installed, certainly not in 2000.

Right now, the XP Pro on the Dell is a KeyGen Volume installation and the Office 2003 Pro is a blocked VLK installation.

Buying Windows genuine Offer XP at $149 and Office Genuine Offer at $149 to $349 (depending upon which Office 2007 you choose) might actually double the value of that old Dell!

  • Thanks Dan, it looks like they were trying to sucker me a bit, it doesn't look like it came with XP, it came with Win98 apparently.

No way this machine is worth getting XP to me, I'll just give it back to them and tell them what I told them to do first, buy a new machine.  Not my problem in other words.
