The best that I can offer right now is to file a bug report:
How to Submit Bugs and Live Mesh Logs
Hopefully, a new build will be available in the near future and you can give it another try. Unfortunately, I have no clue when a new version will be released.

What kind of firewall? if you are behind an authenticated proxy, Live Mesh will not work.

I have a similar problem... but am not behind an authenticated proxy - just a plain old NATS firewall.Everything was work fine last weekend - but this weekend it fails to start.

Have you tried simply rebooting the PC? Check your Internet Explorer settings - Tools/Internet Options/Connections/LAN Settings - make sure that automatically detect is not selected.
You can also try reinstalling Live Mesh to see if that resolves it.

I also am unable to use the mesh because of the "fail to start" message. I had been using the mesh on my computer for 3+ weeks, no problem. Then I did a disc cleanup, which apparently corrupted a lot of my files on my computer, because a number of my programs stopped working. I have gotten most of them operating again with a lot of effort, (uninstalling and installing a number of times, hours on phone with tech support, etc.) but not Live Mesh. I have uninstalled, reinstalled over 20 times, rebooted, changed a number of variables in the process of doing these actions, no satisfaction. I am always getting the "Failed to Start" balloon (with no explanation as to WHY it failed to start). I suspect that the Disc Cleanup corrupted a file that is used by Mesh that is not removed in uninstalling the program and this is causing the problem (since that was what the problem was with one of the other programs that wasn't working that I finally got to work). However, I have no idea what files I should be looking for to delete to see if that might solve the problem. I am on Windows Vista with Trend Micro firewall (but not being an Uber-Geek, I have no idea what the settings are. Since Mesh worked previously, though, I'm thinking the firewall is not the problem)Monday, August 24, 2009 5:53 PM

Hello, Hamir. I agree that the firewall is not likely to be your issue.
Have you tried the manual removal process described in the "known Issues" post? I'll paste the details below:
Possible Workarounds: The Live Mesh installer, LiveMesh.exe, can be used with switches from a command line to install, uninstall, or repair Live Mesh. Note: sometimes you may need to repair the Live Mesh installation before uninstalling it.
Using LiveMesh.exe switches
1. Download the LiveMesh.exe installer
2. Navigate to http://www.mesh.com/ and log in using your Live ID
3. Click on the Devices tab
4. Select Add Device
5. Select your platform choice then click Install
6. Pick the option to Save (remember this location)
If you are installing on Vista, you will need to run these switches from an Elevated Command Prompt.
1. Click on Start
2. Select All Programs
3. Select Accessories
4. Click on Command Prompt (Please note: if you are installing on a Windows Vista computer, you will need to right-click and select Run
as administrator)
5. Once you are in your Command Window navigate to the location that you saved the LiveMesh.exe installer and type one of the following:
LiveMesh.exe /repair (assumes the product was already installed or needs to be repaired)
LiveMesh.exe /uninstall (removes the product)
LiveMesh.exe (no switch, installs the product)If installing/uninstalling from a Command Prompt does not work, you may need to manually remove the Live Mesh Registry entries.
Manually editing the Registry
1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. Type Regedit and hit Enter (if you are on Vista you will need to agree to a UAC prompt)
4. In the Registry Editor remove the following Registry entries:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Installer\Products\9D1E4BCD781B45B479E1418784C5A935
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\<YOURSID>\Products
\9D1E4BCD781B45B479E1418784C5A935 (NOTE: <YOURSID> value will be unique to you.)

Tried to do the first part of the procedure, but for the life of me can't remember how to navigate around in DOS anymore. I know where the file is saved, just not how to get from the C:\x\y> prompt to the C:\x\y\z\a\d> prompt. My DOS for Dummies book went to the recycler a long time ago.
I'll try the second part and let you know how that goes.Wednesday, August 26, 2009 1:17 AM -
Ok...Just tried the second part. Sadly, neither of the registry keys ( HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Installer\Products\9D1E4BCD781B45B479E1418784C5A935 &
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\<YOURSID>\Products
\9D1E4BCD781B45B479E1418784C5A935) is present.
Soooo...Where do I go from here?Wednesday, August 26, 2009 1:26 AM -

One more quick question...How do I navigate around in DOS? I will try the DOS install and see if that does any good. Probably not...but one never knows....what do I type in at the prompt to get from C:\x\y> to say C:\x\y\z\d?
Wednesday, August 26, 2009 11:42 PM -
Sorry for the long wait for an answer.... In the command prompt, you navigate between directories by typing CD and the path. So, in your example, if you are in C:\x\y and wish to go to the new location, you can enter either:
CD C:\x\y\z\d or, because you are already in the path of your destination, CD x\d
The first command defines the explicit path to the destination from anywhere.
The second defines a relative path.
To get to the root of the drive, type CD\
To move up a level from \x\y\z\d to \x\y\z you can type CD.. - the two dots tell it to go up a level.

Hamir,
I noticed you mentioned you are on Vista. The problem may reside in the Windows Update Agent. Mesh is utilizing thier newest system available and sometimes the updated agent isn't included in the required download packages for Windows Updates as it's not required for non-beta use.
If you go to:
And allow the update, Mesh should install successfully after this.Monday, August 31, 2009 4:45 PM -
Ah, if only it were that easy. Tried running the updater, and I am told that I am running a version of Windows that does not support it. I also tried to do the install and uninstall from the DOS command prompt, and it teased me with a message that had me very hopeful that I had finally beaten this bug....and then the failed to start reared its ugly head. *sigh*Tuesday, September 1, 2009 4:09 AM
