This copy of Windows is not genuine

    Question

  • This morning I turned on my computer only to be greeted by this ugly little message in the corner of my desktop. I've seen this pop up a few times since I first built this computer in 2008, and it has been corrected by restarting my computer, updating my antivirus, and on one occasion calling Microsoft support. Checking this forum, I saw that there was a known conflict with Avast!, which I subsequently uninstalled. However, the problem persists.

Online activation has returned a variety of errors, none of which are particularly informative. When I try to use the "Change Product Key" option, I recieve a message that the "product key is not allowed to be installed". When I use the telephone activation, no numbers appear in the Installation ID section.

Frustrated, I called the activation number anyway, failed the automated system (since I had no installation ID to give), and spoke with a first tier support representative. I was informed that I would need to call another number for Microsoft product support, which would not be available until Monday. I asked if there was anyone else who could assist me, and was put through to a supervisor. This person told me that my Windows software was not genuine, and had been used 8 times on 3 different computers over the last 3 years. The dates matched my use of the software (including my several attempts to get a working installation initially), but aside from overclocking the FSB (and by extension the CPU and RAM) and adding a second video card to be run in SLI, this is the same computer I've always used with this software. When I told this to the supervisor, she called me a liar and began to talk over me, ultimately hanging up on me when I asked her not to do so.

I plan to call Microsoft product support tomorrow to see if I can get this straightened out, but I'm genuinely concerned about the alleged use of my product key. I'm not certain what I can do to demonstrate that this is the original machine for which the software was purchased. I suppose I could attempt to get a receipt through Newegg and show that the components in this computer are the same as the ones ordered with the OS, but that seems weird. I even went so far as to check my wife's computer (the only other one in the house) to confirm that she did not use my Windows key with her installation.

    Am I missing something here?

    Here's my MGADiag info:

This morning I turned on my computer only to be greeted by this ugly little message in the corner of my desktop.

First thing to do, since you appear to have been overclocking, is reset EVERYTHING back to default speeds and voltages.

Then  make sure that the HD is OK, by using CHKDSK, and the HD manufacturer’s Test utility to check data integrity and disk health.

Once you are certain that is OK, then start troubleshooting the WGA problem. I suspect that the first thing you will have to do is un-corrupt the Licensing store....
Please try the below steps to recreate the Store files. This may resolve the issue.

    1) Open an Internet Browser window.
    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
    3) Find the file CMD.exe
    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
    5) Type: net stop slsvc (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes - or it may say that it's not running - this is OK)
    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    9) Type: net start slsvc
    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)

    Reboot TWICE
If necessary, then you may be required to enter the Product Key and/or Activate.

    Reboot

Once complete, please post back with a new MGADiag report

There’s a good chance that this will NOT fix the problem – but it may reduce the number of variables we have to work with.

No amount of chatting to Activation operator will sort this problem out – it’s one of your own making, and it needs to be fixed before making another call to the Activation line unless you really enjoy being passed from pillar to post (and probably being hung up on again)

  • Followed the directions to the letter: problem completely solved.

I'll have to be more cautious when overclocking in the future. While this is the first data corruption problem I've encountered, but it turned out to be one monster of a problem. Which probably means that even though this specific issue is resolved, there's a format and reinstall of windows in my future, because I'm not so foolish as to believe that the activation information was the only data to be corrupted.

Mr. Paton, you have my heartfelt gratitude.

You're welcome –please post a new MGADiag report so that we can sign off on the issue – there were indications that there were likely to be other related problems.

Assuming that you repaired the system soon after 17:06 yesterday (14th) then I think we can say that the problem is solved.
FWIW you had another problem on 1st April (you may be able to track back in event viewer for that one) – which doesn’t seem to have reared its ugly head again.

    Good Luck

  • Congratulations!  You can now do the Windows Vista Happy Dance!
    Carey Frisch

    That is a great link!

I lived in India for 3 years and that Bollywood type music/dancing brings back memories.
